The Portland Police Bureau has just released a new internal training video meant to educate officers about bike-related traffic laws.

This is an internal training video for the Portland Police Bureau. It is narrated by Officer Robert Pickett, who serves as a liaison for bicycling issues, Bicycle Transportation Alliance advocate Michelle Poyourow, and a team of police officers who worked together to come up with the points in the video. The video is meant to educate officers, the two say, remind them of relevant laws, and “to advise officers’ discretion in bicycle enforcement situations.”

On-street bike parking coming to downtown Vancouver

future on-street bike parking.

By the end of this year, transportation planners with the City of Vancouver plan to have their first-ever on-street bike parking corral. The new bike parking is slated to be installed in front of Angst Gallery at 11th and Main Streets (maps).

The owner of the gallery, Leah Jackson, requested the bike parking. According to Jackson, there’s currently only one bike rack on the entire block. “I will be very excited to have it [the new parking]… as I currently lock to a planter box and my son uses a street sign.” (Jackson’s son happens to be the young man who led a ride to protest Vancouver’s all-ages mandatory helmet law back in March 2008.)

The Oregon Manifest Constructors Challenge bicycles have been built, raced, judged, and celebrated. The top 15 bikes (12 chosen for their design and the three that were raced the fastest) are on display at Manifest headquarters at NW 10th and Hoyt. Observers are weighing in with glowing reports and criticism.

The major stories have been told — of Tony Pereira’s blue stunner that won the design challenge, Joseph Ahearne’s gorgeous 9-speed mixte, and the jeans skirt and sweater worn by its rider (who changed into a cocktail dress for the final lap).

The Monday Roundup

Here’s the news we came across last week. Thanks to everyone who sent us links and tips.

– President Obama has signed an order prohibiting federal employees from sending text messages while driving.

– You can now download your own copy of Robert Moses’ 89 page plan for Portland’s transportation future, drawn up in 1943 with its famous plan for a network of inner-city freeways.

– The new bikesharing scheme in Dublin has run into an unexpected snag — it’s too popular. The hope was to achieve 5,000 subscribers in the first year; instead 11,000 signed up in the first two weeks.

– Few in Israel drive during the Yom Kippur holiday, celebrated last week. A radio story tells how the day turns into an impromptu celebration of bicycling, particularly for children.
