Cyclocross Crusade Halloween Bash
Halloween Festival – Saturday October 27th
Clatsop County Fairgrounds
Astoria, Oregon

Dark. So terribly dark. From such pitchy shadows seeps a sound as would be the dry scrape of rusted razor across tender throats held tightly under baleful glare of an ever mute Diana. Fears blend with dream and soon enough comes the wicker-men half-glimpsed out of the corner of the eye, and burning jack-o-lanterns smiling mocking smiles

of knowing what makes ones heartbeat skip and pulse race …perhaps some places are meant to exist only as a dreamtime labyrinth outside of time and space…Clustered close together as much for companionship as for protection our tribe of revelers stave off the worst as kegs are tapped and boil forth in founts of amber goodness…a sweeter sight has never formed as spirits of wood and field gather round the harvest bonfire to lift voices into the night sky. Spilled intentions and woodsmoke cloud the atmosphere. Let the Rites of Autumn run loose under the forgiving embrace of the night but beware for something

wicked lurks in those woods…

Once again it is arrived! “What?” you ask you ask…why the Cyclocross Crusade Halloween Festival and series race #4 at the Clatsop County Fairgrounds!

Directions
Take Oregon Highway 202 east from Astoria for 3-1/2 miles.
Turn left on Walluski Loop Road (by the Oregon State Forestry Department office)
Just on your left is the fairgrounds.

Camping
From the Fairgrounds Director:
We have some available motor home or camper spaces available. We also have a place where we can allow tent camping. It depends on the layout of the course. I don’t want to put the campers in the middle of where you might want to run the race. We have showers and bathrooms available for their use.

We have about 40 RV spaces. with water and electricity (We do not have a tank dump area). $25/night.

Our tent camping space is a big field. Number of spaces is hard to say. Basically people would park their cars and set up there tents by their cars. Cost is $10/night

No reservations this year. Campers will need to check in at the Fairgrounds office. Pay the fee and they will get a tag for their windshield showing that they have paid. If they come and no one is in the office they can set up camp and I will collect from them as I do a walk through and check for the tags. First come, first served.

I would like to encourage people to use the campgrounds at Fort Stevens, the KOA and Campers West. They are all nice facilities.

A service to pay tribute to the life of Brett Jarolimek has been scheduled for Monday (10/29).

The event is open to the public and will be held at 6:30 pm in the commons area of Pacific Northwest College of Art (1241 NW Johnson), where Jarolimek graduated in 2003.

Organizers say the service will be a place for people to get together and share their thoughts and memories of Brett.

This has been a very difficult time for PNCA. The small, close-knit school was already coping with the loss of Tracey Sparling, who was a student at the time of her death on October 11th.

When failure to yield, isn’t

One of the major questions the community is grappling with after the deaths of both Tracey Sparling and Brett Jarolimek is; why were the truck drivers not given a citation for failure to yield to a bicycle in a bike lane?

The law (ORS 811.050) seems clear:

“A person commits the offense of failure of a motor vehicle operator to yield to a rider on a bicycle lane if the person is operating a motor vehicle and the person does not yield the right of way to a person operating a bicycle, electric assisted bicycle, moped, motor assisted scooter or motorized wheelchair upon a bicycle lane.”
