Nearly every time someone complains about how bicyclists are unsafe, uncourteous, dangerous, and suicidal riders, they nearly always mention messengers. Or “those downtown messengers” as the cop put it who wrote me a ticket for rolling through a four-way stop intersection on a sleepy bike boulevard.

Yesterday I finally made it out to one of the Alpenrose Cross Clinics put on by Team S&M and Sellwood Cycle Repair. I’ve heard the clinics have been very popular since they started earlier this month and this one (the final one) was no exception. There were at least 100 participants all looking to hone their skills and learn from the masters.
The season begins this Sunday so everyone was eager to polish their technique and ask nagging, last-minute questions. On hand to demonstrate those skills and answer those questions were old pros like Rhonda Mazza, Erik Tonkin, Brad Ross, and a host of others.
The BTA has some new digs (1979 SW 5th Avenue) and they had a little office-warming party last night to make it official. I was able to make a quick visit to the open house to check things out.
It was great to see their new place all cleaned up. Last time I was there things weren’t looking so hot. Now they’ve got nice new carpets and desks and the place is very professional and business-like.
The party was well-attended by a bevy of advocates and transportation bigwigs. I didn’t stay long because I was on my way to a cyclocross clinic (and besides, I was fully spandexed up).

As promised when I introduced my partnership with Finetoothcog, web programming guru Michael Jones of Code in Motion has been hard at work trying to integrate your stolen bike listings into a Google Map interface.
It’s not quite fully functional just yet, but this morning he sent me over a sneak preview of an actual Google Map that he has populated with 113 stolen bike listings from September (believe it or not, we’ve had 174 bikes listed this month, but only 113 of them had adequate address information).
