🚨

6/20: Hello readers and friends. I am having my second (of two) total knee replacement surgeries today so I'll be out of commission for a bit while I recover. Please be patient while I get back to full health. I hope to be back to posting as soon as I can. I look forward to getting back out there. 🙏. - Jonathan Maus, BikePortland Publisher and Editor

Despite ruling, Officer continues to ticket fixed gear riders

officer barnum

[Officer Brett Barnum
taking the oath at the
Ayla Holland trial.]

Officer Brett Barnum of the Portland Police Bureau Traffic Division has been at the center of the fixed gear enforcement issue. He was the officer who convinced a traffic court judge to uphold his citation of Ayla Holland back on July 28th (the case is being appealed).

Then, just last Tuesday, Barnum found himself in court again for the same violation. This time John Boyd, a local architect, convinced the judge to overrule Barnum’s ticket on the grounds that the definition of “brake” was not clearly defined in the statute (815.280(a)(b)).

Now, despite this recent ruling and what would appear to be a statute in legal limbo, Barnum is still ticketing bicyclists for riding fixed gear bicycles without a hand brake.

Bike traffic counts completed

I just received the final bridge bike traffic counts.

Overall, the average daily number of bicyclists that ride across our four main downtown bridges (Steel, Broadway, Burnside, Hawthorne) was up 18% in 2006.

PDOT also has non-bridge bike traffic counts from about 20 or so other key locations throughout the city. They haven’t yet organized all the findings and I hope to have a more complete report soon, but my source at the City has shared several little nuggets.

First, here’s the final bridge breakdown:

Ditty Bops on their way to Portland

[Abby and Amanda in DC]
Photo: Ditty Bops

Back in May I posted about The Ditty Bops and their cross-country bike ride to promote their new album “Moon Over the Freeway.”

The band is now up in Seattle where they play a concert tomorrow night and from there they’ll ride down to Portland. They’re scheduled to play The Aladdin Theater (3017 SE Milwaukie Ave) on Tuesday night (9/12).

I heard from Abby (one-half of the duo) and they’re looking for some route suggestions and they’re also looking for people to join them on their ride out of town the day after their show. If you’re interested, stay tuned to their official bike tour blog where they’ll post more detailed times and meeting places.

visit to Community Cycling Center

[Detail of new mural]

The Community Cycling Center (CCC) has just announced that the beautiful new mural painted on the side of their retail store on NE Alberta Street is finished! In honor of everyone that made it happen, the CCC plans to hold a party and celebration on Sunday, September 10th from 3-6PM.

The whimsical and vibrant mural was created by local artist Robin Corbo and made possible by a $15,000 grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council (RACC). Corbo has worked since July with her crew of volunteers to complete the 1,100 square foot painting. Here’s more from the CCC press release:

An update on the Stolen Bike Listings

You might have noticed that I just posted 72 stolen bike listings. Sorry for the onslaught (especially those of you that read via my RSS feed) but I can explain everything.

But before I do, check out this video clip from FOX News (KPTV) that aired a few days ago. It features an interview with yours truly as well as someone who recovered their bike here on BikePortland.org.

OK, back to the explaining…
