Tonight at 11: KGW presents ‘bike/car challenge’

Tonight at 11 o’clock, KGW-TV (channel 8) will feature a special segment on bikes and cars.

The piece will attempt to show how it feels to navigate Portland streets from a different perspective. They took a regular bicyclist (who just so happens to be BikePortland.org columnist Elly Blue) and had her drive a car from her home in Southeast to Powells in the heart of downtown Portland.

They then took someone who regularly commutes by car and had them ride a bike home from work (Emanuel Hospital) in Northeast Portland.

It’s coming…

This weekend, cyclocross racing will put Portland in the national cycling spotlight when the finale of U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross comes to town.

Slav Davidzon

A local entrepreneur who operates “sustainability focused” bike tours and who founded a successful web hosting business has just announced his candidacy for mayor.

26 year-old Slav Davidzon sent an email to supporters this morning announcing his candidacy that said in part,

Bikes won’t have to share

With all the recent talk about the Sellwood and Columbia River bridge projects, I haven’t heard a peep about the Sauvie Island bridge.

Last time I looked (this weekend), construction on the new bridge is moving right along. According to a press release from Multnomah County, the new arch span will be installed on Friday, December 7th.

Sauvie Island is becoming an increasingly popular destination for Portland cyclists. At just about 10 flat miles north of downtown, the scenic roads are a magnet for all types of cyclists; from triathletes in training, to biking berry pickers and cyclocross racers.

Local author and historian Eric Lundgren — who previously shared his research on Portland’s first “Cycle Park” — will speak on the topic of Portland’s bike history this Friday (11/30) at Portland State University.

Lundgren’s talk is part of the ongoing Transportation Seminar Series at Portland State University’s Center for Transportation Studies (CTS). Former talks in the series — which are all streamed live and archived online — have featured Rutgers University Professor John “Make cycling irresistible” Pucher and economist Joe “Green Dividend” Cortright.

Lundgren says his talk will take a spin into our bikey past, to a time over a century ago, when Portland was building a network of dedicated bicycle paths. Here’s more from the event notice:
