Salem gets bike bridge, what about Portland?

Back in November, I got an email from City of Salem project coordinator David Skilton. He wanted to share news that they’re converting an old railroad bridge on the Willamette to a bicycle and pedestrian-only crossing.

The Salem project sounds exciting. It’s got federal funding, is likely to get $1 million from ODOT Transportation Enhancement funds, and it just received its first private grant (from the Cycle Oregon Fund no less).

No sympathy for cyclist struck on Swan Island

This disturbing account of a car-bike collision on Swan Island was reported by the victim yesterday in the Portland Bike Forums:

“On January 2nd, I was riding home from work at 5:15p.m. and was was struck by a Jeep Wrangler pulling out from a stop sign. The driver was pulling out from N Wygant St. onto N Basin Ave.

As I approached the intersection, the Jeep appeared to be coming to a stop at the stop sign. Therefore I concluded that I had time to cross in front of the Jeep as she came to a stop.

New riverfront trail dedicated on Swan Island

Yesterday a new trail was dedicated on the Swan Island riverfront. The “Going to the River” trail is a 3/8 mile section of the existing Greenway Trail that now offers one full mile of peaceful, riverfront accessibility that isn’t surrounded by freeways, trains and hoardes of people.

On hand at the dedication was Commissioner Sam Adams, Portland Parks’ Gregg Everheart, head of Swan Island’s Transportation Management Association Lenny Anderson, Freightliner employees, staff from the city’s Bureau of Environmental Services, and others.
