Pro bike racing roundup: Hour Record, Omloop, Kuurne-Brussels

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

I want to experiment with writing pro race roundups if there’s interest. If you like this, comment below. Note there will be spoilers; I won’t delay spoilers by a week like in the video roundup.

The big weekend races I’m summarizing:

  • Evelyn Stevens’s world hour record
  • Womens Omloop Het Nieuwsblad
  • Mens Omloop Het Nieuwsblad
  • Kuurne – Brussels – Kuurne
  • Random news

Evelyn Stevens’s world hour record

Evie Stevens set the official hour record from the Olympic velodrome Colorado Springs. There’s a non-UCI record that is faster, but using the banned superman position. The track was concrete, which is unusual. Here’s a a great interview/analysis, and here’s a great gallery.

Womens Omloop Het Nieuwsblad

World Champion Lizzie Armistead won the Omloop after going off the front. Good for Lizzie!

Mens Omloop Het Nieuwsblad

Saturday’s Omloop race was won by Belgian Greg Van Avermaet (BMC). He beat Peter Sagan and Luke Rowe in the final sprint; Sagan had led an acceleration partway through the race that caused everything to go weird in the middle of the race. Sagan was in the main peloton and just took off from the group. He quickly reached the lead group, which caused it to shatter (knowing the peloton would chase Sagan down). That turned into a breakaway group of eight (including Van Avermaet).

Kuurne – Brussels – Kuurne

Sunday’s race followed Saturday’s Omloop and had many of the same riders. Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Sagafredo) won the race. He went off the front after the last climb, staying in front with a 30-60 second lead for the last hour of the race.

A Lotto Soudal rider was also hit by a medical motorcycle(!), which didn’t even stay to attend to the crash. After so many neutral car and moto-caused crashes last year, it’s not a great sign to see it is still happening.

Random news

ASO will be promoting a Chilean wine in the Tour de France. It’s only on non-French stages, since they can’t legally advertise alcohol in France.

Guest opinion: To make paradise, stop putting up parking lots

The planned parking garage and hotel are shown in green. All the whited-out areas are spaces where there is an existing above-ground parking lot. This does not include on-street parking or below-ground parking.

This is a guest post by Kiel Johnson, a resident of the Lloyd District who operates the Go By Bike shop and valet.

The Portland Development Commission’s startling new approach of publicly financing massive parking garages to pay their future operating costs should concern any citizen who does not want Detroit-style bankrupt public spaces.

After about a year on hold, proposed improvements to a much-used neighborhood greenway are back in action.

City project manager Sheila Parrott will meet March 10 with the Buckman Neighborhood Association to discuss the need for speed bumps and a new traffic diverter to reduce auto speeds and volumes in inner SE Ankeny Street.

City of Portland’s 823-SAFE hotline now offered online

traffic safety form

The new web form.
(PortlandOregon.gov)

There’s now a keyboard-ready alternative to the Portland Bureau of Transportation’s excellent 823-SAFE hotline.

The city’s hotline has a great reputation among those in the know, who use it for things as diverse as a poorly timed traffic signal or a low-hanging branch. Even on issues that can’t be fixed immediately, a history of reports about a given location can alert city staffers to a bigger project worth tackling.

The phone hotline has been around for over a decade (at least), and many people also use the safe@portlandoregon.gov email version. Now the City of Portland offers a web-based version.

New Sellwood Bridge opens with a “Dang!”

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Cheers for the new Sellwood Bridge turned to jeers less than 12 hours after it officially opened.

Multnomah County says at about 6:00 am this morning a woman drove a pickup truck onto the biking and walking path on the north side of the bridge. Then when the path narrowed and the truck got sandwiched between two barriers, the woman got out and left the vehicle.

County spokesman Mike Pullen said the woman likely approached the east end of the bridge from the parking lot of the Riverside Corral, a bar located on the northwest corner of Tacoma and 6th. “She probably drove over a curb,” he said. Pullen added that, “There were signs in the vehicle that indicated drug use.” The County filed a police report.

Portland Police Public Information Officer Pete Simpson told us they’ve contacted the woman. “An officer spoke with driver on the phone who said she got on the wrong path and got it stuck overnight,” he said. “No arrest, no cite, no damage.”
