Commissioner Sam Adams continues his march toward finding a way to fund fixes to our transportation system with a series of Town Hall Meetings to discuss his “Safe and Sound Streets” campaign.

This campaign includes a major bicycle component to the tune of $24 million for 110 miles of new bicycle boulevards. Watch the Front Page of BikePortland.org for more coverage. For now, be sure to save the date and attend one of these important Town Hall meetings.

Cross report: Horning’s Hideout brings on the hurt

The River City Bicycles Cross Crusade marched on yesterday with a stop at Horning’s Hideout, a private ranch nestled in the hills above North Plains. Following up record-breaking participation last week, race officials reported another impressive turnout of 906 racers.

These valiant Crusaders faced a challenging (to put it nicely) course full of unforgiving bumps, jarring descents, gravel patches, and slippery, off-camber turns.

The course left many racers exhausted and depleted. Fortunately, it seemed like the spectators (many of them racers too) sensed the strain and cheered extra loud and energetic. Cowbells clanged and supporters screamed; audibly willing the racers to keep moving forward no matter the pain.

The media, the Police, and bike lanes

Screenshot of Oregonian’s web headline.

I don’t have time to share as much as I’d like right now, but given the massive front page story by the Oregonian today, I have to share some thoughts.

First, I am disappointed at the Oregonian’s story, especially at a time when emotions are so raw.

Also, it is important, that we keep this tragedy in perspective. Overall, according to experts I spoke to this morning, the type of collision that took Sparling’s life is very rare.

That being said, Portland obviously has room to improve.

Hundreds of Portlanders came together tonight to ride (and walk) in memory of Tracey Sparling and the tragic collision that took her life less than 36 hours ago.

We gathered at the west end of the Burnside Bridge. Before making our way up Burnside to SW 14th, ride organizer Carl Larson mounted a pedicab and said, “I just felt this was something that had to be done.”

A media day whirlwind

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Today has been quite a whirlwind.

My phone rang at 7:30 am this morning. It was someone from a local media outlet. Since then I’ve given three on-camera interviews and have read through mountains of comments.

I haven’t really had the chance to work on the story myself. A lot of questions remain.
