Last week, Portland Mayor Sam Adams made a surprising move by firing Police Chief Rosie Sizer and moving control of the bureau back into his office (and away from Commissioner Dan Saltzman).

There might be more to report on this in the weeks to come (will Adams relinquish the transportation bureau to make room for police?), but for now, with Sizer suddenly out of the picture, I thought I’d look back in the BikePortland archives to recall when and how she engaged with bike issues during her four-year tenure.

Here’s the news that caught our eye this week:

– Michelle Obama has taken on the issue of childhood obesity, and her task force has called for major transportation reforms, particularly complete streets.

Two new terms to add to your bike jargon

The Proletariat, a bike for
aspiring “aggromuters”.
(Photo: Joe Bike)

Knowing the jargon is a key part of being a true bike nerd/transportation wonk. VMT, fixies, bonk, roadies, ‘bents, multi-modal — someone should publish a dictionary of them all.

On that note, in the interest of helping you stay current, I thought I’d share two new terms I’ve come across in the past few days: “aggromuter” and “policy crush.”

‘Totally Spoked’ art show coming in June

Bikes seen at Alberta Art Hop-29

The Totally Spoked art show
opens June 3rd.

While at the Alberta Art Hop on Saturday I saw a flyer for Totally Spoked, an art show billed as “a visual feast of all things two-wheeled.”

To kick off the show, organizers have planned the Totally Spoked Alleycat that will be followed by an after party at Rotture (315 SE 3rd on Burnside). The party will feature live music from Japanther, Jaguar Love and a special performance by The Sprockettes.

Artists in the show include Mike Giant, Andy Jenkins, Marco Zamora, Will Barras, Tommii Lim, Aesthetic Apparatus, Bradley Delay, Joker, Brenton Salo, and Joe Vollan.

STP ride will cross St. Johns instead of Broadway Bridge

STP finish in Portland

Bridge in 2007.

If you’re one of the 10,000 people signed up to ride in the 31st annual Seattle-to-Portland Bicycle Classic in July, take note. For the first time since 1989, the route entering Portland from Highway 30 will be different this year.

The STP route usually winds through Northwest Portland and then crosses the Willamette River via NW Lovejoy and the Broadway Bridge. But this year, due to streetcar construction, organizers have decided to use the St. Johns Bridge instead.

The new route will take riders across the bridge in St. Johns, then onto N. Willamette Blvd and N. Rosa Parks, then south to Holladay Park in the Lloyd Center via N. Vancouver Ave. Here’s a map detail of the route through Portland:
