Description: I went out of town for a few days and locked my bike on the street (bad idea, but i’m with out a home base at the moment) and I’ve come back and it’s missing. the bike went missing on the 16th of july. It’s a Novara transfer bike 2006. Sky blue and white with dents on the frame from rocks and branches. 7 speed, right hand gear change, silver metal rack on the back. rack was coming off the spokes in the back. Washington County advocates ask permission to bike through park – UPDATED

Here’s an interesting advocacy alert from the Washington County Bicycle Transportation Coalition. They’re hoping the Hillsboro Parks Commission will grant them a variance to allow an event ride to pedal through an area park. An excerpt from their action alert is below (read the whole thing here):

The Tour de Parks planning committee is asking for your help.

Noble Woods Nature Park, one of the parks featured in the Hillsboro Tour de Parks and one of the City’s most beautiful currently does not allow bicycles in the park. In 2009, we asked the Hillsboro Parks Commission to allow cyclists to pedal through the park during the Tour, entering from the south and dismounting when the trail reaches the bluff at Baseline Rd and zig-zags up the hill. While they denied our request, citing safety concerns and that riding through the park was not allowed, riders were permitted to at least walk bikes through the entire length of the park.

On Tuesday morning, July 27th August 10th at 7AM, we plan on attending the Parks Commission meeting and again ask to be allowed to ride through for the 3rd Annual Hillsboro Tour de Parks on Sunday September 26, 2010. We invite you to join us.

TIGER II grant would bring biking improvements to rail corridor

This substandard bridge in SE Portland’s
Brooklyn neighborhood would be improved
with TIGER II grant funds.

A partnership between TriMet, Metro, and the cities of Portland and Milwaukie could lead to a series of significant biking and walking improvements along the yet-to-be built Portland to Milwaukie light-rail line. TriMet is the lead applicant in a $13.2 million TIGER II grant request that would include a new multi-use path, a new biking and walking-only bridge in Milwaukie, and several other components along the rail corridor.

A new Streetfilm (watch it below) taken during the recent Velo-City Global conference in Copenhagen is like a refuge in a storm.

Here in Portland (and across the country), we still struggle with resentment over bike lanes, a local media that’s happy to stir it up, people wanting to ban bikes completely because they’re simply in the way, people on bikes who can’t be bothered to slow down for other bike traffic, and public transit employees whose actions and words make our streets less safe for people on bikes.

London is the latest big city to get
a public bike-share system, and it
comes with these cool illustrations.

Here’s the news that caught our eye this week:

– The outcome of this year’s particularly dramatic Tour de France was decided by a mere 39 seconds. Meanwhile, Bend Oregon’s very own Chris Horner had a stellar ride, finishing in the top 10 as the highest placing American. Read his final Tour diary entry here.

– In other news, RAGBRAI, the “oldest, longest, and largest bicycle tour in the world” is now underway. In Iowa.

‘Street sprints’ hit the Pearl District

Portland’s Pearl District played host to a rare form of bike racing on Saturday evening when local Ironclad Performance Wear Cycling Team held their first annual Street Sprints competition. The format was simple: a three-block, side-by-side (no drafting) sprint between four racers at a time. The top two from each heat moved on and the bottom two moved to the sidelines to watch. There were separate classes for men, women, and fixed gear racers.
