‘Vision Zero,’ a paradigm shift in traffic safety, coming to Portland Friday

Noted “Safety in Numbers” researcher and public health consultant Peter Jacobsen will bring the “Vision Zero” traffic safety concept to Portland on Friday. Jacobsen will speak about the topic as part of a seminar at Portland State University’s Center for Transportation Studies.

Jacobsen is currently in Salem where he’s taking part in the Oregon Traffic Safety Conference. Tomorrow, he’ll give a presentation on the links between transportation and health that will be followed by a Vision Zero workshop with ODOT State Traffic Engineer Ed Fischer.

Vision Zero began in Sweden in 1997 as a program with the goal of eliminating all traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2020.

Portland bike coordinator making headlines in Australia

The City of Portland’s Bicycle Coordinator, Roger Geller, is in Melbourne this week to deliver the keynote speech at the 2010 Bike Futures conference. Armed with Portland’s biking success story, he’s making headlines and spreading the gospel of separated bikeways.

In a story published this morning in the Sydney Morning Herald, Geller told the Australian Associated Press (AAP) that Sydney could follow Portland’s path to becoming a more bike friendly city.

Sydney does not have a highly developed, on-street bike network, but according to the AAP, “Geller believes Sydney can be saved.” How? “The key is building more and more dedicated bikeways.”

Local grocery store chain New Seasons Market will open its tenth store tomorrow on the corner of SE 40th and Hawthorne (former location of Daily Grind), smack-dab in one of the most bike-centric parts of town. According to a press release sent out by the company today, the new store has some pretty serious bike-friendly credentials.

Last weekend’s Oregon Handmade Bicycle Show (see my slideshow and mini-report here) made it clear that our region’s custom bike building industry is stronger than ever.

Tony Pereira / Pereira Cycles
Tony staffed his booth, proudly wearing the fantastic new suit that he won as a prize for winning the Constructor’s Design Challenge at the Oregon Manifest. Pereira sold the bike that won that competition (to help finance a move and setting up a new shop) and the centerpiece to his booth at the OHBS was its replacement.

Hard plastic fenders in front and back (the nicer ones that curve around the tires). The tires were smooth, road tires, not the treaded stock ones. Also, there was a larger bike light in the front, and an older planet bike brand red blinker in the back. No kickstand, no rack.

Thoughts on Burnside/Couch after the grand opening

Mayor Sam Adams emceed an event this morning to mark the official grand opening of the East Burnside/Couch Couplet project. The project (which is still not quite finished) began nearly eight years ago and the estimated cost is about $17.8 million. Adams touted the project as a beacon for everything Portland stands for, saying it’s now a multi-modal, “green” corridor that will reduce traffic crashes and boost local businesses, all while being easier to navigate on foot and by bike.
