Ask BikePortland: How should riders treat “T” intersections?

a T-intersection on Naito.
(Photo © J. Maus)
This week’s question comes from reader Ruben Galbraith. Ruben wonders about something I’ve also thought about a lot. Here’s his question:
“How should bikers behave at “T” intersections with traffic signals?
For me, this always occurs while heading North on Naito. What could be really smooth ride is often broken up by a series of (ill-timed) lights. The lights are totally necessary for cars, which need to cross over each others lanes at these “T” intersections. It doesn’t feel right to roll on through… But is it kosher to stop, and then proceed through the light? You know, like a right-on-red, or more aptly, from a one-way onto another one-way?”
City will cut ribbon on ‘Neighborhood Greenways’ at Beach School
The City of Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) has announced their first “Neighborhood Greenway” ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event will take place Wednesday afternoon at Beach School in the Overlook neighborhood of North Portland.
PBOT wants to showcase their growing network of residential streets that have been engineered to prioritize the safe movement of bicycles. These streets are also known as bicycle boulevards, but PBOT will brand them as ‘Neighborhood Greenways’ to show that they’re not just great for bikes, but that neighborhoods also benefit. The “greenways” aspect is a nod to how some of the streets include bioswales, new street trees, and other “green streets” features (more on the name change here and here).

Weekend Recap

(Photo: Metro)
Even with fall upon us and some torrential rains over the weekend, there were still plenty of good times on bikes to be had last weekend. Like last week, I thought I’d recap some of the events with a front page post so those of you that missed out can experience some of the fun.
Park(ING) Day on Friday was a big success, with well over 30 parking spots throughout the region being turned into parks for the day. At Metro’s park on NE Multnomah, people enjoyed picnics on the grass that stretched across two parking spaces. Check out the report on Metro’s website.

Portland Police on lookout for double hit-and-run suspect – UPDATED
This just in from the Portland Police Bureau (apologies for the brevity but I just landed in Las Vegas at Interbike. I’ll update the story when I can):
PORTLAND POLICE INVESTIGATE TWO BIKE RIDERS STRUCK BY THE SAME VEHICLE
At approximately 8:00 a.m. this morning, September 21, 2010, Portland Police responded to an accident involving a bike rider who was struck by a vehicle in the area of northeast 1st Avenue and northeast Multnomah Street. The vehicle was described as a silver Subaru WRX. The vehicle did not have a rear plate and may have a temporary sticker in the back window. Witnesses said there was also a green sticker in the back window similar to a “Monster” drink type sticker.
