Disaster strikes! On Sunday learn how cargo bikes will save the day

You need the Naked Ride and the Naked Ride needs you
The sun is shining and bike fun spirits are high. Pedalpalooza is going strong and tomorrow night it will reach one of its many climaxes when thousands upon thousands of you get naked and pedal through our wonderful city. Yes, it’s time for the legendary Portland edition of the World Naked Bike Ride.
Let’s review the basics shall we?
Where and When
The ride will happen Saturday night (June 16th) at 10:00 pm. The start location is the empty lot at the corner of SE Water and Salmon (same as last year, here’s a map). Folks will begin gathering at around 8:30 to 9:00 pm.
Man behind skateboarding ban also concerned about bicycling, Zoobomb
When I first heard about West Hills resident Eric Nagle’s effort to ban skateboarding in the West Hills, my first thought was: Is Zoobomb — and by extension, bicycling — at risk? Even though bicycling down the hills around Washington Park and the type of skateboarding Nagle is concerned with are different activities; it’s clear that for him, there is no distinction.
A series of emails from Nagle to the City obtained by BikePortland through a public records request, show that, contrary to his public stance so far, he is painting his concerns with a wide brush that includes not just skateboarding but bicycling and Zoobomb as well.
As we shared earlier this week, Nagle has pushed Commissioner Randy Leonard to propose an ordinance (to be voted on at City Council later this month) that will ban skateboarding on a significant swath of roads in the West Hills. Both Nagle and Leonard have said they are not concerned with Zoobomb and that they are focused solely on skateboarders who, according to the proposed ordinance, “use neighborhood streets as a venue for an extreme thrill sport, and not as a means of transportation for which the streets were designed.”

Rider left paralyzed after ‘freak’ crash during Portland mountain bike race – UPDATED

(Photo: Kris Schamp)
Offers of help, positive thoughts and prayers are pouring in from the community tonight as we learn that 31-year-old Portland resident Mat Barton is paralyzed from the chest down following a crash during a mountain bike race at Portland International Raceway on Monday night.
Barton, a skilled and experienced racer, was competing in a singlespeed race at the Portland Short Track series when he hit a series of large bumps, got thrown off balance, and fell head first at high speed. Kenji Sugahara, executive director of the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association, says Barton suffered a serious spinal cord injury. He underwent surgery at Legacy Emanuel Hospital last night to remove broken vertebra. The surgery was successful, but doctors believe his paralysis will be permanent.
According to a journal being kept by a family member, Barton remains in the Intensive Care Unit and is already working on his physical therapy and recovery.
Sugahara told us that injuries of this sort are extremely rare. The last spinal cord injury that happened during an OBRA race, he said, dates back to the 1980s. “As with any athletic event there are certain risks that we take. What Mat experienced was an atypical event.”
