Dispatch from Copenhagen
I just wrapped up my first full day exploring Copenhagen (remember, it’s nine hours ahead of Portland over here). From a bicycling perspective it’s simply remarkable.
They have a 36% bicycle mode share and in some parts of the central city it’s over 50%. What caught my eye at first was the sheer numbers. The packs of riders are larger than I’ve ever seen. I’m staying just a block off of Nørrebrogade (“North Bridge”) which is one of the busiest bike streets in the world. On some days they can see 38,000 bicycle trips over Queen Louise’s Bridge which feeds into it from the southeast. (Nørrebrogade deserves it’s own post. Stay tuned tomorrow.)

Bike is stickered up, as you can see from the image. I don’t know what counts as "proof", but unless the stickers are removed, it’s damn unique and images are proof enough.

For girls on bikes, new research shows a turning point: age 14
for many, things change in their teens.
Image © J. Maus/BikePortland
Statistically speaking, girls and boys tend to have similar attitudes toward bikes until their 14th birthday or so. But around that age, gender attitudes diverge dramatically – and no one’s quite sure why.
As they enter puberty, Portland girls suddenly start reporting much more concern about not knowing “how to exercise the right way,” according to a new study. That’s also the age at which girls start worrying more than boys do about hurting themselves if they’re physically active.
Portland State University researcher Tara Goddard, who presented those findings to colleagues Friday, wonders if girls and boys should get different sorts of encouragement as they build active teen lifestyles.
“Maybe we need to catch them before this split starts to happen,” Goddard said Friday. “Otherwise you’re kind of working backwards and trying to repair that split.”

The Monday Roundup: NYC’s CitiBike and more
Happy Memorial Day, Portland. As you might have noticed, Jonathan and I will be serving up bike-related reporting for the next two weeks by way of a transcontinental tag-team. Let’s start things off with the national bike news that caught our eyes in the last week.
New York City’s long-awaited CitiBike sharing system launched today, and it’s the talk of the town and the bike world in general. With 14,000 annual memberships presold at about $100 apiece, it’s poised to be the biggest win yet for Portland-based Alta Bicycle Share, which operates the systems. Here are some interesting tidbits from this week’s coverage of CitiBike:
— The New York Times showed how the modern bikeshare system was invented in Paris, improved in London, priced in DC and built on station hardware from Montreal. In another piece, the paper reports that experts seem to agree that bikesharing will be remembered as the key achievement of Michael Bloomberg’s 12 years of transportation reforms. “If this is the playoffs, what’s the finals?” says Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan. “As far as I’m concerned, we’re there.”

Owner: Milo Cutts-Carey
OwnerEmail: mcuttscarey(AT)gmail.com
Reward: 200
Description: I locked a bike I had borrowed from a friend, a Grey Trek 7.(?) FX (I would guess it was a 7.3 FX but I’m not certain), to a bike rack beside the Sheridan Fruit Company Parking Lot, on Oak, between MLK and 3rd Avenue, around 8pm. When I returned to it, around 11pm, I found my Onguard lock cut and the bike taken. The bike has thin road wheels, no back fender, a black seat adorned with red and grey on it’s sides (it’s the same seat that comes on a Trek 3700, I’m not sure of the series of this bike, but it looks like the street equivalent of the 3700), straight handle bars, very squeaky brakes, especially the front, and, if still attached, a red back light that attaches onto a band with a mechanism to screw it tight. Many of it’s bolt and screws are rusted, notably where the handle bars are.
