Bicycle Mechanic – Team Lead

Company / Organization

Bike Friday

Job Description

Ever dream of having a job building something environmentally benign that you can feel good about at the end of the day?

We are an ambitious group of people trying to do our part to make the world a better place to live. Green Gear Cycling (Bike Friday) is an internationally recognized manufacturer of high performance folding & cargo bicycles for traveling and utilitarian/commuting use.

This position is like wrenching in a bike shop, but better!!

Your Team Lead position in our Service Department would include a mixture of wrenching – mechanic skills, department leader and organizer managing the inflow and outflow of warranty work, elective service, used bike trade ins, etc. Working with customers via email and over the phone, and helping customers with deliveries and troubleshooting in our showroom.

Our bicycles are made completely on-site, from raw steel tubes to boxed complete bikes that we ship domestically and export internationally (including China!). The relationship between service and production is characterized as a close feedback mechanism. Production supports service with on-site fabrication, service supports production with user feedback, design requests/ suggestions, etc.. It is a very rich relationship and work environment, far more depth than a traditional bike shop.

The team lead responsibilities for the day-to-day queue managing of the service department includes:

Managing the intake of repair/ warranty work and organizing the queue of projects for you and your colleagues.
Monitoring the workload and ensuring service work is completed on time or managing customer expectations when a promise date needs to be re-scheduled.
Balance daily and weekly responsibilities with a strong flow of questions/ interruptions/ diversions from your colleagues (production and sales) as well as customers (call ins and walk ins).

Qualities/ Skills required:
Superior mechanical aptitude
Strong bicycle mechanical / repair skills
Organizational skills (you thrive at creating order from random bits)
Positive, optimistic attitude
Ability to multi-task in a fast paced, dynamic work environment
Desire to be held personally accountable
Exceptional bike knowledge for problem solving skills, both in person as well as on the phone with customers

The pay range is based on industry for the skills you bring to the position . We have a matrix called the skills bank which is an explicit guide for enumerating desired skills and the compensation for the skills. This translates to the fact that we would like you to earn as much as possible (adding value to Bike Friday) by making explicit the things we value and how much you would earn once you offer these skills.

We offer a progressive work environment with supportive co-workers who will be interested in your success. Inside covered bike parking, shower facilities, discounts on bike parts, paid holidays, shop privileges and family friendly are some of the benefits you’ll enjoy with us. And, you get an allowance to build yourself a personal bike on the company’s dime.
