Traffic Division roundup: Captain re-assigned; Bicycle Liaison Officer named – Updated
Captain Todd Wyatt of the Portland Police Bureau’s Traffic Division has been temporarily reassigned. According to the PPB, Wyatt was recently involved in an “off-duty incident while driving that involved another driver.” The incident is being investigated by the Idaho State Police.
The Traffic Division is the primary contact for bicycling and traffic safety issues. Since taking over the division back in July 2010, Wyatt has been a fixture at bicycle and traffic-safety events. Wyatt and his Lieutenant Eric Schober have also been regular attendees of the Bicycle Advisory Committee meetings.

Cops will focus on N. Williams crosswalk during Tuesday’s rush-hour

The Portland Bureau of Transportation and the Police Bureau will be watching you during the evening rush on N Williams Avenue on Tuesday night (8/23).
As I reported back in July, PBOT and the PPB will be doing a “crosswalk enforcement action” at the intersection of Williams and Morris. The idea is to educate the public about Oregon’s crosswalk laws.
The cops will be out in force with a special focus to make sure people operating cars and bikes stop — and stay stopped — when someone tries to cross the street. (They’ll also be watching for jaywalkers, they say.)
Been harassed on Rock Creek Road? Lawyer says to take action
“The hope is that if enough people can show that this issue has also affected them, then the Portland Police and Multnomah County District Attorney’s office will… take appropriate, safe legal action.”
— Mark Ginsberg, lawyer
The alleged vehicular harassment of people riding bicycles by a resident of NW Rock Creek Road near Skyline Blvd continues to be an unsolved problem.
Mark Ginsberg, a local lawyer, bicycle advocate and member of the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association, is working to soothe tempers and make sure that action is taken against the alleged suspect if warranted.
Today, Ginsberg sent out a message to several bike-related emails lists urging anyone who has been victim to harassment on Rock Creek Road to call the police. I’ve pasted Ginsberg’s email below:

The Monday Roundup
[Publisher’s note: Thanks to the non-profit Community Vision and their annual Harvest Century (October 8th) for support of the Monday Roundup! – JM.]
Here’s the news that caught our eye this week:
– “Why are American’s driving less?” asks the Washington Post/Bloomberg business blog. It’s important food for thought for transportation planning.
– A new report details the potential economic benefits of the UK being more bike-friendly, including over 2 billion pounds a year saved in missed work days and up to 56 billion in health spending due to reduced car emissions and increased physical activity.
