Metro and the City of Portland have collaborated to purchase six acres of land north of the St. Johns Bridge where they plan to extend the Willamette River Greenway Trail by over one-third mile. The $1.9 million purchase was made possible by Metro’s 2006 natural areas bond measure, the City of Portland’s Grey to Green initiative.

The land is an area known as Baltimore Woods and is located adjacent to N. Decatur Street at North Caitlin Avenue. A statement from Metro says the purchase will “help fill the gap between Cathedral and Pier parks.”

Help ODOT plan the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail

A tour of the Historic Columbia River Highway

ODOT is hosting a presentation and open house tomorrow night (8/24) to get public input on the remaining 11-mile segment of the proposed Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail.

I took a ride on a segment of the trail back in 2007 and it was superb. Since then, advocates have worked closely with ODOT and Oregon State Parks on their dream of fully re-building the entire route. The old highway was completed in 1922, but fell into disrepair when Interstate 84 was built.

Get on the bike train!

Remember back in May when I happened upon the Beach Elementary School bike train? Now, a former volunteer intern with the City of Portland’s Safe Routes to Schools program is organizing the first-ever Portland Bike Train Conference.

Recent college grad Kiel Johnson says he helped get the Beach School bike train going last year and it was “really successful” so he wants to bring the idea to other schools. The Beach bike train averaged about 10-20 riders per week. On one morning back in May, over 100 kids and parents rolled into school together, cementing Beach’s reputation as a school where biking is taken seriously.

The Monday Roundup

NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg introduced
a major study and new policies that
will make it safer to walk in the Big Apple.
(Photo: NYC DOT)

Morning folks and welcome to the Roundup…

— The New York City DOT released a “landmark” study on walking that will help them push even farther, faster in re-claiming their streets for people (more details in NYC DOT press release).

— In St. Charles County, Missouri, the rural road bike ban is still being considered. The man who proposed the ban, Councilman Joe Brazil, has now issued two other options. He calls one of them a “fall-back ordinance” and it would require people riding on certain “dangerous stretches of highway” to wear “a blinking light, a flag and a mirror.” I’m not kidding.
