With a long weekend coming up, I can’t bear to leave that CafePress story front and center.
I hope you don’t mind, but I can’t resist sharing these photos of my four year-old daughter Eleni. On our way home from the Three Bridges celebration last weekend, Eleni hopped aboard a friend’s tandem. She was so excited to be up there, speeding along the Esplanade with her feet strapped in.
She smiled like I’ve never seen her smile before. The pictures tell the rest of the story:
The League of American Bicyclists is leading a charge to voice complaints about anti-cyclist products being sold at popular web product retailer CafePress.
Here’s the message being sent around by the League’s Advocacy Coordinator Lou Elin Dwyer:
“Please go to the address below and see the violence being promoted against bicyclists by CaféPress through stickers, t-shirts and coffee mugs.
The message: “I don’t share the road,” accompanies a car striking a bicyclist. There are others here.
A cameraman, an MIT scientist, and an award-winning TV news director/producer from Boston have been soaking up Portland for the past few days. They’ve interviewed everyone from TriMet GM Fred Hansen to PSU professor Ethan Seltzer.
They’re here for a project spearheaded by MIT research scientist Tom Piper (photo below). Piper works in MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning and he has embarked on an ambitious project that he says is, “about building better cities, faster than would happen otherwise.”
The MLK Viaduct Project construction zone is proving to be quite a pain for some cyclists.
As part of their “Artist Originals” campaign, messenger bag manufacturer Timbuk2 is hosting an art charity event at the newly opened Ace Hotel in downtown Portland.
The event will coincide with the First Thursday art walk on June 7th.
Three artists will use Timbuk2’s Artist Canvas bag as their canvas to create original, one-of-a-kind works of art. The proceeds from sales of the bags will go to local non-profit groups.

Northeast Portland native Jamie Nichols “totally flipped” when he saw his first Dutch bakfiets cargo bike. He sees them as the perfect way to replace the family car for short neighborhood trips and even sees them as an answer for what he calls “a looming fuel crisis”.
Well I had my doubts whether or not it would ever happen, but after some ads popped up recently it was just a matter of time…
And now it’s official, the Batavus “Old Dutch” bikes have landed in America.
Our local Patagonia store has literally gone all-out for bike commuting.
It all started last May, when they began a store-wide commuter challenge for National Bike Month and as part of an effort by store managers to reduce their ecological footprint.
The response was so positive that manager Tim Reinhardt decided to make it a year-round program. He also worked to get other Patagonia stores involved.
I stopped by their shop yesterday to see how things have been going and I was stunned at how much the program has taken off. Right inside the entrance is a big Bike to Work display and an indoor bike rack overflowing with employee bikes.
