Mercury plays PDOT with bike safety suggestions

Not to be outdone by the Oregonian or the Willamette Week, the Portland Mercury has published their contributions to what has clearly become a citywide conversation about how to improve bike safety in Portland.

In their issue that hit streets today, news editor Scott Moore (a daily bike rider himself) offers up a feature article titled, Failure to Yield: Portland’s Most Dangerous Intersections for Bikes—And What Can Be Done About Them

Here’s some good news for anyone that rides SE 9th Avenue in Sellwood.

The old trolley tracks on SE 9th between Linn and Marion Streets (see image below) are being removed by PDOT.

KATU has the story of a collision last Friday in Hillsboro that resulted in the death of 47 year-old Hillsboro resident Kerry Alfred Teufel.

Dan Kaufman of CrankMyChain! Cycle TV has posted his video from last weekend’s Cross Crusade Halloween fest.

It’s an awesome video that captures the fun-loving spirit of Portland’s signature cyclocross series, the River City Bicycles Cross Crusade.

Not only does the video capture the zany costumes, racing action, and characters of the Crusade, but (as usual) Dan created and performed an original song to go with it (accompanied by PDOT’s Greg Raisman on harmonica!).

Noticed this story on KGW yesterday:

“A Portland cyclist launched to the asphalt will get a $100,000 settlement check from the City of Portland.

The city forgot to change a sewer grate when it created a bike lane in Southwest Portland.

Essentially, it accidentally set a trap and cyclist Gary Dunkley fell right into it.”

Blue hybrid style Trek bike, about 10 years old. Grip shifters. Some stickers on frame (just bought used, not sure what they were), clip on handlebars for light, Cat Eye rear light under seat. Foam seat, black seat cover had 2 holes in it.

A few weeks ago, I received an amazing gift. A friend of mine, Tiago DeJerk, completed an over life-sized stencil painting on one of the walls in my office.

If you’re a regular reader, you might remember Tiago. I’ve written about his paintings (he was Tiago Denczuk then), I took photos at his wedding on Mt. Tabor over the summer (which culminated with a glorious bike parade), and images of him dressed as “Pinga da Clown”, from his days as a clown at the Alberta Street Clown House, have graced many of my galleries over the years.
