Crash on SE Hawthorne at 10th offers a lesson in caution
cand Hawthorne yesterday.
(Photos: Christopher Perez)
The collision on the transit mall downtown wasn’t the only bike-involved crash yesterday. Reader Christopher Perez was the first person on the scene of a collision on SE Hawthorne about two hours before Richard Krebs was struck while crossing SW Morrison.
Perez witnessed the collision and provided a detailed account and photos on his Flickr page. Here are some excerpts from what he saw (emphasis mine):
“Both east bound lanes of traffic are stopped due to construction on the east side of Hawthorn at SE 12th. At 10th, both lanes of traffic provide a break for cross traffic.
New trail opens at Sandy Ridge mountain bike area
The Sandy Ridge Trail System just gets better and better. The trail network, already a huge hit with off-road biking enthusiasts around the region (check out our coverage of it here), has just added a new bridge and a new section of trail.
According to the Northwest Trail Alliance, a temporary closure of the area ended on July 24th and is now re-opened “with some very welcome additions.” The new features include a bridge over Little Joe Creek and a brand new section of trail. A new, 2.25 mile loop has been added to the Three Thirty Eight trail and it includes a technical, rock drop section and a bypass for less experienced riders who’d rather avoid it.
Video of the Week: Fun coverage of the World Naked Bike Ride
It’s a rare media outlet that can cover something like the World Naked Bike Ride with a good balance of professionalism and good-natured fun, but the crew at G4 TV seems to have done just that.
Their coverage (watch it below) of Portland’s 2010 World Naked Bike Ride features some familiar faces including “Route Czar” and frequent BikePortland commenter Matt Picio and prolific bike fun participant, gravity biker, and Hammercise co-creator, Dutch.
Here’s the video (possibly NSFW, depending on where you work):
Lloyd District ponders bike-sharing system
As public bike-sharing systems continue to be launched in cities around the country (including a novel new system being developed in New York City), the City of Portland still sits on the sidelines. But that hasn’t stopped the Lloyd District Transportation Management Association from exploring a system of their own.
The Lloyd District TMA is a non-profit, public/private partnership funded through a combination of Metro and federal grants along with membership from nearby businesses. Their mission is to promote a “balanced transportation system” in the heavily commercialized area bounded by the Willamette River, I-84, NE 15th and NE Broadway.
