PPB arrest motorcycle operator for I-205 bike path collision

*Scroll to end of story for major update*

Last night at just after 1:30 am I got a phone call about a “weird occurrence” on the on I-205 multi-use path just north of NE Glisan St on-ramp (map).

It turns out that someone on a motorcycle heading northbound somehow managed to end up on the adjacent path and struck a man who was riding his bike. Both people went to the hospital with what are being reported as non-serious injuries.

In that location, the I-205 path is only separated from the on-ramp by a concrete barrier wall (see aerial photo below). While bicycling through this intersection, I’ve often lamented at how awkward and unpleasant it is. It’s not clear how this actually happened. The police have yet to release a statement about it.

Yesterday, The Oregonian published a detailed update on the story we shared last month regarding a settlement being reached in the case of a serious hit-and-run that occurred in May 2010 and involved the owner of the Mt. Hood Skibowl, Kirk Hanna, and a Lake Oswego resident named Robert Skof.

Here’s the lede from The Oregonian:

“Two years after Mt. Hood Skibowl owner Kirk Hanna struck a bicyclist — then sped off, leaving the man sprawled unconscious on a Southwest Portland road — Hanna has agreed to pay his victim $500,000.

The case is unusual not because Hanna left the scene — dozens of Portland area motorists do that every year under similar circumstances — but because he eventually agreed to plead guilty to DUII and hit-and-run driving.”

I don’t do a lot of product coverage here on BikePortland; but a reader sent me a link to something the other day that really got my attention. It’s called the “Bikesuit” and in a place like Portland where riding in the rain is a way of life, I thought it deserved your attention too.

The Bikesuit is a one-piece, head-to-toe bit of rainwear is meant to protect you from all the elements. It’s made by The Smart Products Company, which is based in The Netherlands (same folks that brought us those Rainlegs chaps).

Here’s more from the company:

Mini-bike downhill race coming to Mt. Tabor this weekend

Zoobomb

Portland’s only sanctioned downhill skateboarding race, the Mt. Tabor Downhill Challenge, will feature a mini-bike category. The event takes place this Sunday on the slopes of the popular southeast Portland park.

This is the first time the MTDHC has had a mini-bike category and to my knowledge, this is the first officially sanctioned mini-bike downhill race in Portland’s history. Veteran Zoobomber Gabriel Tiller says Zoobomb actually started on Mt. Tabor 10 years ago, so this event marks an anniversary of sorts and a return to its roots.

Event organizer Billy “Bones” Meiners says all bikes that enter must have have a stock, 16-inch frame and 16-inch wheels. Some mini-bikers add weight to their rigs to increase speed, so there’s a 10 pound limit on additional weights. Bikes are also allowed to have fairings.

To keep the bicycling momentum going strong in Vancouver, the Bicycle Alliance of Washington and Bike Clark County are hosting a half-day workshop tomorrow (6/21, sorry for the late notice!) called, Hub and Spoke: Growing Bicycling in Vancouver.

Here’s more about what’s in store for the event:

“In this interactive workshop, attendees will examine models from around the state and nationally, discuss opportunities to promote safety and economic development locally, and develop tools for engaging with local and state governments to make riding a bike easier in their community. We’ll also take a short bike tour, so be sure to bring your bike!
