— So what really happened in terms of transportation behavior in New York after Sandy? The Rudin Center at NYU has released results of a survey. One takeaway: “Walking and biking commuters were, on average, the least frustrated.”
— Some people wonder why I’m so impatient to redesign streets and improve access for bicycling. Here’s part of the reason: Twice in the past few weeks I’ve heard of people being killed on sections of streets that were planned for traffic calming or other changes, but for some reason the changes had been stalled or rejected. One in New York City, the other in Redwood City, CA. Tragic and avoidable.
— Cars or people? League of American Bicyclists Policy Director Darren Flusche continues the important conversation about performance standards and how we choose to measure success of streets.

There are various folks who drive around in trucks and look for and take scrap metal and yard supplies. They often have bikes as well. They take stuff marked ‘free’ but also look for easy access to garages. I’ve seen them park, get out and walk around, looking at homes/yards/garages, then drive further and park and do the same. I guess they return at night.

Description: Old puegot in fairly bad shape. Original black paint with white speckles but I spray painted green on it randomly. When ridden the torn metal around the seat tube creaks loudly. There is also a U lock attached and white and red tape wrapped around it in various places.

Green Lane Project director in town next week for panel discussion

Martha Roskowski, the director of the Green Lane Project will be in Portland next week and she’ll moderate a discussion with local transportation officials about bikeway design. The event is set for Tuesday night (12/4) from 6:30 to 8:00 pm and it’s being hosted by the Portland Bureau of Transportation.
Roskowski is the former executive director of Bicycle Colorado who was tapped by the Bikes Belong Foundation to lead the Green Lane Project, which aims to hasten the development of protected bikeways in America. Back in April, Portland was chosen as one of six “focus cities” to take part in the project.
