Screen shot from SF Chronicle.

A man who killed a person on foot with his bicycle last year won’t serve any jail time in what’s thought to be “the first vehicular manslaughter conviction in the nation involving a bicyclist.”

Prosecutors said Chris Bucchere, 37, of San Francisco, ran “several red lights” and was moving at an estimated 30 mph when he lethally collided with Sutchi Hui, 71, in a crosswalk, as Slate and other outlets reported Tuesday. Hui survived for four days before dying.

City will celebrate one year, one million bike trips over Hawthorne Bridge

Hawthorne Bridge bike counter hits 1 million-7

Bike trips are worth celebrating.

The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) plans on making some noise about the success of cycling on the Hawthorne Bridge. To toast the upcoming one-year anniversary of the automated bicycle counter and the 1 millionth trip of 2013, PBOT is hosting a special “Breakfast on the Bridges” event this Friday (7/26).

When the counter reached 1 million trips back in April, we wondered why there wasn’t any fanfare. It seemed like a perfect opportunity to tout cycling, but the City didn’t make a peep. Perhaps now that the bureau seems to be finally settling in with two new faces at the helm (Transportation Commissioner Steve Novick and new Director Leah Treat), they are ready to get their cycling groove back.

Two talks bring bike smarts from Montreal and Boston

Phil Goff and Jean-François Pronovost

If “the Portland high five” is patting yourself on the back, the surefire cure is to get a taste of the exciting things other cities are up to. Two experts on bike infrastructure are coming to share some of that wisdom with Portland for free, one next week and one next month.

Next month’s speaker is from arguably the best bike city in North America: Montreal. Jean-François Pronovost of Vélo Québec will share his lessons from Canada about “growing a world-class cycling culture” as part of the first in a major new series of transportation lectures sponsored by the Portland-based Institute for Bicycle and Pedestrian Innovation.

Event: Can Dutch-style bicycle urbanism work in the Portland region?

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Sorry for the late notice folks… But I forgot to mention we are sharing our perspectives and takeaways from the recent study tour to the Netherlands. It’s a brown bag discussion at 12 noon on Wednesday, July 24th at Metro Regional Center (600 NE Grand Ave). Details below:

Netherlands Transportation Tour Debrief

Can Dutch-style bicycle urbanism work in the Portland region?

Last month, several business leaders and a delegation from Portland and San Francisco traveled to the Netherlands to learn about Dutch transportation Policy.

In the Netherlands, 27% of all transportation trips are made by bicycle. In Amsterdam, over half of the trips are made on two wheels.
What lessons can we learn about transportation policy and urban design from the Netherlands? Is it possible to achieve similar results in our region? Would we want to? Can a city possibly have too many bikes?
Come and hear about the experience of Portland’s delegation:

• Sam Chase, Metro Councilor- District 5
• Gerik Kransky, Advocacy Director of the Bicycle
Transportation Alliance
• Heather Hoell, Executive Director of Venture Portland
• Jonathan Maus, Editor-in-Chief of bikeportland.org.
