Velodrome bill update

A bill that would allocate $3.5 million in state lottery funds to the construction of two new velodromes in Oregon is kicking into high gear.

Republican Senator Jason Atkinson is holding a round table strategy discussion today at the capitol building in Salem. Invited to the table are a diverse list of movers and shakers from all over Oregon. The goal is to coordinate efforts to build a broad front of support for the bill.

The bill has also found support within the legislature. According to a story in southern Oregon’s Mail Tribune newspaper, the bill has “several co-sponsors, including Democratic majority leader Kate Brown from Portland.”

In addition to Brown, eight other legislators have already signed on as co-sponsors of the bill.

Bike enthusiasts from Southern Oregon are also starting to make some noise. Rob Martens emailed me this morning with a link to his new Southern Oregon Velodrome blog that is intended to keep them all updated and informed about the bill.

For some reason I can’t find the bill on the state’s legislative website, but I’ll grab a copy of it while I’m at the capitol today.

UPDATE: Here’s the official text of the Velodrome bill, Senate Bill 926.

I’m off to Salem…stay tuned for more updates and information.
