On May 4th, urban planning giant Jane Jacobs would have been 101 years old. To mark her birthday, Portland-based Oregon Walks will host a screening of a new documentary about her life. The event is also the organization’s annual membership meeting and will also include a panel discussion with three women who are “following in Jane Jacobs’ footsteps.”
Citizen Jane: Battle for the City, released four days ago by Altimeter Films, retraces the battles she fought with her chief antagonist Robert Moses.
“This film retraces the battles for the city as personified by Jacobs and Moses, as urbanization moves to the very front of the global agenda,” reads a description from the filmmakers. “Many of the clues for formulating solutions to the dizzying array of urban issues can be found in Jacobs’s prescient text, and a close second look at her thinking and writing about cities is very much in order.”
The Oregon Walks event will take place at 7:00 pm on May 5th at Cinema 21 (616 NW 21st Avenue).

After the screening, there will be a short panel discussion that includes: Leah Treat, Portland Bureau of Transportation Director Leah Treat; OPAL Environmental Justice Oregon Deputy Director Vivian Satterfield; and Portland for Everyone Program Director Madeline Kovacs.
