Bike/ped tunnel on Historic Highway to re-open this weekend

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

For the first time in 61 years, people can once again follow the old Columbia River Highway right through the basalt heart of Oneonta Bluff.

That quote comes from a story in today’s Portland Tribune about an exciting bit of progress on the project to re-establish the Historic Columbia River Highway as a bike and pedestrian route through the Gorge.

For more on this project, check out my report and photos from June 2007 when I rode parts of the route with Jeannette Kloos from the Friends of the Historic Columbia River Highway.

That group has their annual Gorge Ride coming up this summer. Look for another story with more on this project on the Front Page soon.

The Oneonta Tunnel restoration will be celebrated this weekend. For more on the tunnel and that event, read this story in the Portland Tribune.
