Brian, a documentary about the life of Brian Reynolds, won the Katie Merritt Audience Award at the Bend Film Festival last weekend. Reynolds was an avid cyclist and former board member of the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) who passed away back in 2007 after a 15 year battle with cancer.

Reynolds, a former CFO of Portland-based Rejuvenation, was a well-known figure in the local bike scene in part because of how he used cycling as his “treatment” for cancer.

Last week the BTA honored winners of their annual Bike Commute Challenge, which included the special Brian Reynolds Award given to the person who rode the most miles during the month of September.

The documentary, Brian, starts off by following the 45-year old Reynolds as he prepares to ride in the Reach the Beach fundraiser. Reynolds, with family and friends riding alongside, completed the ride with just one lung (a fact he shared via a sign pinned to his back) and while breathing from a tube connected to an oxygen tank in his saddle-bag.
