The Portland-based Willamette Pedestrian Coalition has hired Lynn Lindgren-Schreuder as its first Executive Director. According to a press release issued by the WPC, the new hire, “marks a milestone” for the formerly all-volunteer organization.
The WPC was founded 16 years ago and works to advocate for pedestrians and ensure the development of safe and walkable neighborhoods.
With a new Executive Director, the WPC says they, “aim to do for walking what the Bicycle Transportation Alliance has done for biking: make pedestrian friendly development and transportation corridors key benchmarks for sustainable urban living.”
To help meet their goals, Lindgren-Schreuder and the WPC Board have launched a “Walk 2008” campaign, which includes the following objectives:
- Conduct over 40 Pedestrian Legal Clinics, Safety Seminars, and Advocacy Trainings to increase pedestrian and driver awareness
- Craft new legislation for the 2009 session that will protect pedestrians
- Encourage over 1000 people to engage in a “Walk Challenge,” which will encourage people to walk for short everyday trips
Lindgren-Schreuder moved to Portland in 2001 and has also lived in Prague and the Netherlands.
