The BTA hosted an awards party for their Bike Commute Challenge last night: luckily not everyone who participated showed up.
Even though attendance at the party was double what organizers expected (over 400 people packed the inner-Southeast venue), the BTA revealed that nearly 10,000 Oregonians (and some Washingtonians) from 889 registered companies logged at least one trip as part of this year’s Challenge.
Those numbers are fantastic, but the most exciting statistic of the night was that this year around 2,000 of the participants were newbies; as in, they had never commuted to work by bike before.
Everyone’s a winner in the Bike Commute Challenge, but not everyone can claim supreme victory (and get a cool little trophy).
Some of the winners (from a variety of categories and based on number of trips taken, % of days ridden, and other factors) included; Metro, New Seasons Market – Arbor Lodge, and the Community Cycling Center.

Kudos to the BTA staff (especially Events Director Michelle Poyourow) and all the coordinators from each company who go the extra mile to make this program a success.
Now, let’s make sure all those folks keep riding into the cold, dark, wet, winter!
