Last Friday, Nikkie West of the Community Cycling Center put the final touches on a bike art garden at Abernethy Elementary school in Southeast Portland.
The garden includes six artistic sculptures (see them all) made from recycled bike parts and was a collaborative effort between West – the CCC’s recycling coordinator – and Beret Halverson. Beret (pronounced Brett) and Nikkie met in Americorps and now Beret is in charge of Abernethy’s organic garden.
Also lending their heads and hands to the bike art garden were about 75 fifth graders. They got started last fall and were involved every step of the way; from brainstorming sessions, to final construction.

Abernethy’s principal Tammy Barron is thrilled with how it turned out:
“The garden really brings together everything we’re encouraging in our kids; growing food, biking, exercise…it turned out great. Especially the sunflower wheel, all the kids love to spin it as they walk by!”
