Weekend Event Guide: Upriver screening, fountains, LaFart, Tour de Cure, and more

Friday, July 28th

Breakfast on the Bridges – 7:00 am to 9:00 am on Hawthorne, Steel and Tilikum

The last Friday of every month Shift volunteers serve breakfast to people riding across the Steel, Hawthorne and Tilikum bridges. Stop for a few minutes to enjoy the view and this wonderful community-building event.

Friday Evening No-Drop Road Ride – 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Western Bikeworks (NW 17th & Lovejoy)

Plan on a 1.5-2 hour ride at a conversational pace, 15 miles, and 2,000 feet of climbing. Road bikes recommended.

VeloBeats PDX – We Be Ravin – 9:00 pm till late at Wilshire City Park

The second installment of VeloBeats PDX – themed dance rides led by Sarah AKA Phoenix, with Daedalus and his amazing tall bike Shadowfax and its magnificent sound system. Creative rave attire encouraged. These rides are as much about costuming as they are about the ride and the music.

LaFart (Ladds Fastest Alley Race Trial) – 9:30 pm at center of Ladd Circle

A new event that will challenge your street smarts as much as your stamina. Must have a GPS unit to prove completion of the route. Format is a poker run where the best hand wins (not necessarily the fastest). Good lights encouraged.

Saturday, July 29th

Tour de Cure – all day at AmberGlen Park in Hillsboro

Tour de Cure is an annual cycling and walk event to raise funds for the American Diabetes Association.

Sorella Forte Women’s Club Ride – 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at River City Bicycles

A weekly, women-only ride geared to intermediate riders. Pace is 15-17 mph and length is about 30-40 often with hills. Come out to improve your riding, meet great people, and have fun!

Saturday Morning Beginner Friendly Road Ride – 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Western Bikeworks (NW 17th & Lovejoy)

Nice leisurely paced ride great for those just starting out in the wonderful world of road cycling. Complimentary Stumptown coffee pre and post ride.

Biking About Architecture: Alberta – 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at 23rd & Alberta food cart pod

Hitting Alberta and Concordia to check out the fabulous edifices: a tiny home, Sabin Green cohousing, a hacienda infill, a platinum LEED and a hand-made modern, plus the world-famous Stump House (as seen in Dwell Magazine) — and alley-to-alley cruising!

Dropout Washout – 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm at PAZ PDX (SE 16th & Woodward)

Bring your boat, canoe, tube, kayak, or inflatable craft to PAZ by bike or trailer. From there you’ll ride to Sellwood, lock up your bike and paddle/float down to Ross Island for fun and games. Bring grillables.

Splish, Splash It’s a Wet, Wet Portland Ride – 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm at Lovejoy Fountain Park

It’s Afterpalooza! Pedalpalooza was so much fun we’re doing this ride again — except in reverse direction. Last stop is Jamison Square Park in the Pearl. Time to get wet!

Sunday, July 30th

The Sauvie Shootout – 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at Ovation Coffee & Tea (941 NW Overton)

Portland’s hottest — and fastest — training ride. Neutral roll-out on Highway 30 to Sauvie Island then the sparks will fly. Group will split into groups based on speed so riders of all abilities are welcome to join in. Find Andrew the ride leader for a free one-day OBRA membership.

Fox Proframe World Tour – 4:00 pm at The Lumberyard

Demo the new Fox Proframe on The Lumberyard’s super-fun tracks, trails, and jumps with sponsored athletes like Josh Bryceland, Josh Lewis and Kirt Voreis.

Downriver Ride to Upriver – 8:00 pm to 11:00 pm at Portland Opera (On Esplanade at Tilikum Bridge)

Upriver is an hour-long documentary film about the Willamette River and current efforts to restore it. This free screening is part of Portland’s Movies in the Park series and will be shown on a jumbo inflated screen in Cathedral Park under the St. Johns Bridge. The 9-mile bicycle ride follows the course of the river to the park and swings by a hidden overlook above the Willamette along the way. Meet at the Biketown station at the Portland Opera Building for the start of the ride.

ZooBomb – 8:30 pm to 11:30 pm at People’s Bike Library of Portland (SW Burnside and 13th)

A Portland tradition like no other. Take the MAX to the top of the Washington Park then “bomb” down the hills. Bring a good helmet and mini bikes are encouraged.
