We’re officially in the “take what you can get” weather period now, and after this week’s rain storms, high 60’s with a few clouds doesn’t look too bad at all. To help you get the most out of your last few days of sun, I’ve got a fully-loaded event guide for your cycling pleasure, so pack a parka and ride safe!
Friday, September 10th
7:00pm-9:00pm: Bikestravaganza off the Chainring Tour
On the last stop on a month-long, 10 state tour, local bike activists Elly Blue and Joe Biel will be hosting a video presentation and sharing stories of activism in Portland and around the country. Madison’s Grill (1109 SE Madison), $3-$10 sliding scale with no one turned away. See Jonathan’s full coverage of the event here.
4:00pm: Celebration Ride through Riverview Cemetery
Come celebrate the official opening of the new Riverview Cemetery bicycle route with the BTA. Thanks to individual donors and a match from Lewis and Clark College, the new route features signage and markers directing cyclists through the private cemetery property. This event will feature refreshments and a group tour through the new route. Ride meets at the Palatine Hill Road Entrance of the cemetery.
All Weekend: Weekend of Pain + Suffer’n
What happens when a dentist isn’t satisfied with just inflicting pain on people during the work week? He opens up his property to 3 days of grueling short track, crosscountry, and cyclocross racing. This OBRA event at Bald Peak in Hillsboro is open to participants and spectators. Register online or day of race on the Pain + Suffer’n website.
Saturday, September 11th
9:30am: Tour de Lab
This 18 or 30 mile urban tour of Lucky Labrador pubs features a costume contest and plenty of great food and beer for participants. A benefit for DoveLewis emergency animal hospital. Register online or day of event. Ride starts at Lucky Lab NW, 1945 NW Quimby.
12:30pm: Transport your Activism
After the success of the first Transport your Activism ride during Pedalpalooza (see our coverage here), the folks at Active Right of Way are hosting another tour of transportation issues in Portland that need addressing. This bicycle tour will feature presenters on all modes of transportation, and promotes discussion about what needs to be done and how to go about making it happen. Ride meets at the Peace Park at N Interstate and NE Lloyd.
Sunday, September 12th
9:00am: Child Aid Guatemala Literacy Ride
This benefit ride supporting literacy programs in Guatemala features an 11, 30, or 55 mile loop around Forest Grove. Ride starts and ends at Roger’s Park, registration and donation information available on the Child Aid website.
10:00am-7:00pm: PDX Cycle Swap
The first of what is sure to be a new Portland staple, the PDX Cycle Swap will feature music, a beer garden, auctions, race events, and many other forms of bicycle business and fun, all in one location at 1300 N River St (under the Fremont Bridge). Come check out the grand opening festivities this weekend, and the 2nd Sunday of every month from here on.
