Several additional books and movies have made their way into the BikePortland Bookstore in recent weeks.

Among them are two titles supported by upcoming live author appearances. David Byrne will be at the Bagdad Theater September 30, 2009 to talk about his experiences pedaling urban environments around the globe. This is a ticketed event and includes a copy of Byrne’s new Bicycle Diaries, which is being released today.

Also, Anthony Flint, author of Wrestling with Moses will appear at Powell’s on Burnside October 15 at 7:30PM in a public discussion along with PSU Urban Studies and Planning Professor, Carl Abbott.

If you prefer to ponder bike culture and infrastructure at home, we’ve also added some DVDs for your entertainment and inspiration — including one of my favorite bike flavored films, the 1998 Quebec production, 2 Seconds. Along with that is the German documentary, Hell On Wheels, covering Team Telekom at the 2003 Tour de France more deeply than you have likely seen before.

Remember that through our partnership with Portland’s own Powell’s Books, BikePortland.org will receive a portion of all sales on Powells.com made through the links on this page (including any books and DVDs, not just the ones we link to).

New additions

Bicycle Diaries

by David Byrne

Since the early 1980s, David Byrne has been riding a bike as his principal means of transportation in New York City. Two decades ago, he discovered folding bikes and started taking them on tour. Byrne’s choice was made out of convenience rather than political motivation, but the more cities he saw from his bicycle, the more he became hooked on this mode of transport and the sense of liberation it provided. Convinced that urban biking opens one’s eyes to the inner workings and rhythms of a city’s geography and population, Byrne began keeping a journal of his observations and insights.

Wrestling with Moses: How Jane Jacobs Took on New York’s Master Builder and Transformed the American City

by Anthony Flint

Like A Civil Action before it, Wrestling with Moses is the tale of a local battle with far-ranging significance. By confronting Moses and his vision, Jacobs forever changed the way Americans understood the city, and inspired citizens across the country to protest destructive projects in their own communities. Her story reminds us of the power we have as individuals to confront and defy reckless authority.

2 Seconds (DVD)

After losing a race by 2 seconds, downhill racer Charlotte Laurier returns to Montreal and gets a job as a bike messenger. Her relationship with a local bike shop owner is unexpected and their characters are a joy to watch. Spoken in french, english and italian with subtitles.

Hell On Wheels (DVD)

This documentary produced in Germany follows the Telekom team (now T-Mobile) through the 2003 Tour de France and gives a perspective unseen in American coverage of the annual event. Inspiring, hair raising, absurd, smelly and honest.
