“It’s winter and cold and dark, but that doesn’t mean you need to sit around and get blob-like.”
— from the Pain in the Park website

Jeff Henderson (the man behind the Oregon Trout City of Portland Triathlon) and his partner Jonathan Eng (a personal trainer) are launching “Pain in the Park“, a new series of free cross-training workouts that will take place at parks throughout Portland.

On his website, Henderson writes that he launched the workout series because, “It’s winter and cold and dark, but that doesn’t mean you need to sit around and get blob-like.” He also writes that the workouts will focus on fun.

Also according to Henderson, the sessions will, “straddle the line of hilarious and ridiculous,” and they are “meant to be dirty, sweaty, comical, whimsical, and exhausting – sort of like sex but in public.”

Sufficiently intrigued, I emailed Jeff for a bit more info:

“The idea has its roots in something I used to do when I lived in San Francisco. A group of us would gather at Chrissy Field in the winter and run around for an hour, making things up as we went and having a blast. There are public staircases all over the place in SF, and the most fun was had racing each other to the top – with a teammate riding piggyback. We’ll do that at least once at the Alameda Bluffs.

The cold and rain just make it better, because you’re going to get wet in Portland anyway and once you start moving around you’ll be warm and toasty.”

If channeling your inner-Rocky after work with a few other pain-and-fun-loving folks is your cup of tea, check out the website for more details.
