Cash prizes will be awarded for Most Artistic and Most Sustainably Innovative entries.
The Greener Homes and Gardens Expo, put on by the publishers of The ReDirect Guide, will give creative bike builders a chance to shine (and win some cash) with their “Creative and Custom” bike competition.
Bikes that pass an initial screening by a jury (made up of the event organizers) will be displayed in the front lobby of the Portland Expo Center during the show.
According to Katie Heald with the ReDirect guide, show-goers will vote on their favorites in two categories: “Most Artistic” and “Most Sustainably Innovative” (both categories are explained here).
The contest has a $25 dollar entry fee and a Grand Prize winner in each category will receive 40% of all the entry fees collected.
Among the contest rules and regulations were a list of requirements for all bikes entered:
- May be built from scratch or adapted from existing bicycles.
- Must be no bigger than 4′ wide x 8′ long x 6′ tall.
- May not display or broadcast any message.
- May not display any signage other than that provided by the Event Organizer.
- May not contain any hazardous materials, live organisms (flora or fauna), edible or perishable items, or any fuel. Event organizer reserves the right to remove and disqualify any entry that is deemed dangerous or potential harmful. All decisions are final.
- Must be operational. An individual weighing no more than 250 pounts must be able to ride the bicycle around the parking lot of the Portland Expo Center.
- Must be non-motorized and be 100% human powered. Entries with external power sources will be disqualified.
