Saturday was the big Earth Day Celebration at Woodlawn Park. Unfortunately it was also one of the coldest and wettest day we’ve had in a while.
But despite the dreary weather, scores of Portlanders showed up by bike. Among the many bikes in the parking corral, I saw several families with trailers (and one on a Bike Friday tandem). They were treated to a gutsy performance by the Sprockettes (more photos below), bike-powered smoothies, affordable helmets (include the “brain bucket”), and a host of fun bikes to demo in the Transportation Village.
The demo area featured lots of interesting bikes including; EcoSpeed equipped recumbents, hand-cycles, a beautiful Jorg & Olif dutch city bike, and of course a few bakfiets. The most interesting bike at the event was the Turf Trike (in photo). Described by its manufacturer as, “The world’s first cycle powered golf cart,” it was a blast to tool around on. It rode really smooth, had huge tires, and the front-end attachment offers a lot of utilitarian possibilities.
Another fun bike at the event was Gabe Amadeus’s “Bad America” tallbike. I took it for a spin and did some off-roading. Everything was great until I forgot how tall it was and fell over when I tried to stop. Lame.
Gabe has much more style on it than I do:
Still wet and bruised from my tallbike tumble, I knew the Sprockettes performance would make everything better. And I was right.
Despite persistent rain and slippery conditions, the ladies in pink showed their true colors and performed valiantly in front of an appreciative crowd.
