Emissions-free explorer coming to Portland

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

Tim Harvey is on the final leg of his trip from Vancouver to Vancouver. This amazing explorer has ventured around the world by bike, foot and boat, and his entire route was emissions-free…as in no motorized power was used.

Think about that for a moment.

That means doing crazy stuff like rowing the 1500 km passage to the Canary Islands and hiking and biking through -60 degree temps on the Siberian Tundra. Yes, Tim Harvey is the real deal.

Tim’s travels have taken over two years and he did the whole trip to raise awareness about climate change. The idea is this: If Tim can circle the globe without emissions, maybe others will realize they can start driving less and using their own power to shop, get to work, and pick up the kids.

I read about his adventure in the current issue of Wend Magazine where Harvey, who is a talented writer, shares the ups and downs of this monstrous undertaking. It was a gripping read and I can only imagine what it’s like to hear about his adventures in person.

Here’s an excerpt from Wend Magazine:

“In a musty gym storage room in the coal-blackened mountain town of Aldan, eastern Siberia, I was in a bad way. Sweating and delrious with a climbing fever, I had lost a teammate and was fresh out of food and cash, without a ruble or kopeck to my name. My odds of cycling across Siberia—at this point, even surviving Siberia—fely laughably low.”

On November 6th, I won’t have to imagine it because he’s coming to Portland to share a presentation with us and do a one-hour Q&A session. Tim has a fascinating collection of photos, videos and stories that he will share at this free event.
