“9 women riders gathered at Wilshire Park under dry skies and set out on a tour of 19 trees in the Irvington and Sullivan’s Gulch
neighborhoods.Among the trees we visited was an evergreen oak (Canyon Live Oak), a deciduous conifer (Dawn Redwood), a seedless chestnut (Baumann Horsechestnut) a pair of male and female ginko’s at Sabin School and a Northern Catalpa in full bloom.
We also found the homeowner who lives with a Weeping Japanese Cherry, in his yard, and he described climbing out on the roof and being able to lay on top of the trees’ dense canopy as kid. In addition to being rare in Portland, the Chestnut Oak we visited
graces the home of the first rose queen in Portland. Crowned in 1907, Carrie Lee was the daughter of George Chamberlin, an OR Governor and Senator.Want more trees?
