It’s a fantastic day for cycling in Portland. I got up early to join friends on the Hawthorne Bridge for free pastries and coffee from Shift’s Breakfast on the Bridge crew. The sun welcomed cheery commuters and the conversation flowed as nicely as the hot coffee…
- Good to see Clarence Eckerson of BikeTV in town. His great bike movies are coming to Portland cable TV soon…
- Linda Ginenthal and Janis McDonald stopped by on the way to their work of making Portland a great place to bike (they both work in Transportation Options for the City of Portland).
- Dumpster Dave rolled up. He’s excited about his upcoming bike swap meet. It’s going down on May 14th at Free Geek and it’ll be followed by a dance party. Don’t miss it.
Saw some cool bikes too. Here’s a list of my favorites:
- Randy Albright’s 1970s Raleigh Folder. It’s in awesome condition and rides like a dream.
- John Beaston’s memorial bike. He’s plastered his Subaru with white ribbons for each soldier killed in Iraq and he had some left over for his bike. It’s a powerful statement.
- This red Cinelli had a few of us slobbering. I didn’t get the owner’s name, but she was mighty proud of her red beauty.
- Then Ian Stude from PSU Bike Co-op rolled up and stole the show. He has set up a brake-lever, cable-actuated bike bell on his bike that is just the coolest thing ever.

After eating way too many pastries, I rolled up the Waterfront and stopped to soak up the blooming cherry blossoms. While there, I met Ericka, Rick and Amani Rickman enjoying a family ride. They were happy to let me snap a few photos of them.
I finally pulled myself away and headed home, only to be forced to stop at The Fresh Pot and snap these photos of people enjoying the sun (and the stellar bike parking!).
