Who We Are
For over 10 years Cycle Portland has worked to support and inspire visiting cyclists and local commuters alike though quality repairs, guided bike tours around Portland, and affordable well maintained bike rentals. We continue this mission today as we look for an experienced mechanic to help fill out our small team as part of our full-service shop in downtown Portland, OR.

While primarily focused on bicycle repair, this position is multidisciplinary by nature. As the mechanic you will have an opportunity to work with the public to determine sound solutions based on our customers unique needs, while using this feedback to actively adapt and improve the products we carry. This position will also oversee weekly evaluation and orders from our vendors with a large amount of autonomy regarding specialized products tailored to our clients.

As part of our tour and rental operations you’ll get to share your knowledge and experiences about cycling, and destinations to ride in Portland while overseeing the routine maintenance of our fleet of rental bikes. Our tour fleet utilizes nexus 7 speed hubs, and the rest of our rental fleet comprises of more traditional styles, in addition to several Shimano e-bikes.

Knowledge and skill in the following areas (while not required) is preferred, and represents core strengths as part of this position.

Desire to work with and listen to the public to meet customers where they’re at for service needs and questions
Monitor, service, and maintain rental fleet, including familiarity and comfort working with Shimano internal hubs
Familiar with inventory management, bike shop distributors, and ability to discern and anticipate shop needs through a weekly ordering cycle.
Comfortable grasp of bicycle mechanics across multiple disciplines, including vintage, e-bikes (Shimano), wheel building, hydraulic disc service, internal hubs, and traditional derailleur systems. While not required, related certifications are a plus
Supportive of team building and working in a small environment, with ability to recognize and re-prioritize tasks as needed between repairs, rentals, and customer interactions
Familiarity with POS systems (square), occasional help with counter checkout, in addition to answering general questions about select non-bike retail items we carry
Ability to lift bicycles and other objects up to 50 pounds on a regular basis, however reasonable accommodations can be made for qualified applicants

This position is ideally suited to self-motivated individuals who are objective oriented and enjoy dialing in on small details and projects while keeping in touch with the longer term goals of our service department. This position interfaces often with the public, and comfortability with giving directions, route assistance, and helping customers plan their visit to Portland is highly valued. While we’re sometimes known as a tour & rental shop, we deeply appreciate our connections to our local riders, friends, and commuters formed over the last 10 years. In this position you’ll get to continue those long term relationships with our cycling community, and have the opportunity to identify and fill those unique needs as they arise.
