Weekend Event Guide: Swifts, Sandy Ridge, scavenger hunt, Sunday Parkways and more

Whether you want to chill out with the full moon or hone your singletrack skills, we’ve got a ton of ideas for you this weekend. This week’s guide is as full as I’ve seen it since the height of summer. Way to welcome the fall season BikePortlanders!

The forecast for the next few days looks to be excellent. We might have a shower today, but the weekend will be dry and in the low 70s.

Friday, September 25th

Portland Bike Party Swifts Ride – 6:00 pm at Chapman Elementary School (1445 NW 26th Ave)
Join “the Great Bike Migration” ride and see the dramatic flocks of Vaux Swifts swarm and then take shelter in a chimney of a school in northwest Portland. Five mile ride leaves after the birds roost (about 7:30 pm), meets at Chapman near the chimney and will ride to a cozy pub in southeast. More info here (FB).

Bianchidonk – 7:00 pm at Salmon Street Fountain
If you love Bianchi bikes, show up and represent. On this ride you’ll meet and ride with other Bianchi lovers as you trade stories of Bianchi’s past, present, and future. Also open to the Bianchi-curious. More info here.

Saturday, September 26th

Grand Prix Rhona Mazza #4/Ninkrossi – All day in Washougal, WA
The fourth in the five-race GPRM cyclocross race series moves north to a motocross park in Washougal. Be prepared for fast grass, dirt trails, the traditional Ninkrossi “N” turns, and more. Oh, and 90% of the course is viewable from the beer tent. More info here (PDF).

Oregon Coast Gravel Epic – All day in Waldport
Part of the Oregon Triple Crown Series, this ride/race is sure to be an adventure. Get to know the Siuslaw National Forest while you ride either 35 or 70 miles of dirt and rocky roads shrouded in trademark Pacific Northwest timber, ferns, and creeks. More info here.

Sandy Ridge Shuttle Day – 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at Sandy Ridge Trailhead
This is your time to get your shred together. Sign up for a ticket and you’ll be all set for a full day of trail riding at one of the region’s best mountain biking areas. Event is hosted by (and benefits) Northwest Trail Alliance. More info here.

Autumn Adventure – 9:45 am at PCC Climb Center (1626 SE Water Ave)
This ride, led by the City of Portland Bureau of Transportation, will last about three hours and should be perfect for new and beginning riders. They’ll start near the Hawthorne Bridge and head south to explore new greenways, new bikeways, and a new bridge — all at a social and fun pace. More info here.

Safe Routes to School Bike Grant and Donation Drive – 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at Sitton Elementary School (9930 N Smith St)
Portland non-profit Bikes for Humanity will be giving bikes and safety gear to underprivileged students from St. Johns area elementary schools. They’ll also one accepting used bikes and financial donations as well as offering free bike repairs and helmets to local residents. Come and help out and/or volunteer! More info here.

University of Portland Used Bike Sale/Fundraiser – 12:00 to 4:00 pm at Chiles Plaza (5000 N Willamette Blvd)Need a bike? Choose from 30 used bikes that will be sold for between $25 and $125. The bikes were abandoned on the U of P campus and have been refurbished. But wait, there’s more! Proceeds from the sale will help send students on a volunteer immersion program in Nicaragua. Bike Scout Scavenger Hunt – 1:30 pm at Ex Novo Brewing (2326 N Flint)
Get your team together and get ready to “complete challenges, conquer feats, document experiences and collect treasure” throughout the city. You will accrue points with the completion of each challenge… And you will have the time of your life doing it. This event is put on by the folks behind Filmed By Bike. More info here.

Sunday, September 27th

Battle at Barlow – All day at Sam Barlow High School (5105 SE 302nd in Gresham)
An infamous course on the annual ‘cross circuit; Its climb and off-camber section is burned into many racers’ brains and legs. Races for all categories and fitness levels. More info here (PDF).

Harvest Century – All day in and around Hillsboro
The last organized ride of the year! Choose from four routes — an easy “family” loop up to a 100-mile option. All routes begin and end in Hillsboro and explore the beautiful rural roads just outside of town. Proceeds from this event benefit Community Vision, a non-profit that helps adults with developmental disabilities. More info here.

In Search Of… Silverton – 8:00 am at The Missing Link Bicycle Shop (7215 NE Sandy Blvd.)
Meet at the Woodstock location (SE Woodstock & 46th).
September’s ride takes out to Silverton, by way of Gladstone, Oregon City and Canby. Lots of distance choices if you’re not up for a century that day. More info here (FB).

Bike Milwaukie Ride to Sunday Parkways – 10:30 am at Milwaukie City Hall (10722 SE Main Street)
Join bike advocates from Milwaukie for a ride to take part in Sunday Parkways. There will be three meet-up spots for your convenience. More info here (FB).

Sunday Parkways – Tilikum Crossing/Sellwood Edition – 11:00 am – 4:00 pm
It’s the last Sunday Parkways of the year and it’s going to be a good one! The route will begin in South Waterfront and then cross the new Tilikum Bridge before heading south to explore the sweet streets and neighborhoods of Sellwood. Don’t miss it! More info here.

Bards and Minstrels Full Moon Ride – 7:30 pm at Mt. Tabor Park (SE 69th and Yamhill)
“This is the Mercury retrograde Full Moon Total Eclipse edition,” says the organizer of this ride. Bring an acoustic instrument and take part in a lunar ritual. More info here.
