Cyclocross season is fast approaching. I can tell by the increased listings of ‘cross bikes and gear on Craigslist and the OBRA email list and the photos and updates on my social media stream (many with the #crossiscoming hashtag).

The other clear sign that the season is just around the corner is the announcement of clinics aimed at mastering the many skills it takes to do well in this discipline.

Whether you’re a junior just getting started, or an old pro that just needs to dust off the cobwebs, the clinics below are an excellent opportunity to get ready for the season (and they start this week so… get on it!).

Hosmer Chiropractic and Portland Bicycle Studio Present Cyclocross Skills Clinic Series
This series starts tonight (8/7) and is offered for the next two Thursdays (7/14, 7/21). They’ll start at Portland Bicycle Studio in northwest at 5:30 and work on skills at Wallace Park. Then after the riding and practicing, you’ll get expert recovery and stretching advice with a foam rolling session from the fine folks at Hosmer Chiropractic. Molly Cameron, Seth Hosmer, Chris Bagg and Josh Liberles are the top-notch racers and experts that will lead you to the ‘cross promise land.

They’ll teach you how to: smoothly dismount and get over barriers, get an explosive start, carry your bike, master varied terrain, set up your equipment, and more.

It’s $25 for each week or you can purchase all three for $60.

PDX Devo Junior Cyclocross Clinics
PDX Devo is a junior development squad that knows how to race (these kids are fast!) and how to have fun doing it. They’re hosting a juniors-only (ages 10-18) ‘cross clinic that starts tonight (8/7) and runs every Thursday through September 26th at Alpenrose Dairy (6149 SW Shattuck). PDX Devo Team Manager Annie Bertucio says all levels and abilities are welcome and that beginners and new riders are particularly encouraged to show up.

These clinics are free (OBRA membership, which is just $5 per year for juniors, is required) and sponsored by Upper Echelon Fitness. For more information contact Annie at annie@pdxdevo[dot]com or download a PDF of the flyer.

The ‘cross seasons starts in earnest next month. Start planning by checking out the OBRA schedule.
