Sunday Parkways opens Northeast Portland
streets to traffic-free activities this weekend

PORTLAND, Ore. – Sunday Parkways comes to Northeast Portland this Sunday, June 23, opening an eight-mile route of city streets to traffic-free bicycling, walking, strolling and a variety of activities and entertainment.

The hugely popular Sunday Parkways events are free to the public. This Sunday’s event, the second of five this season, is expected to draw more than 20,000 people of all ages.

The car-free route is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., connecting Woodlawn Park, Alberta Park, Fernhill Park and Rigler School. Music, vendors and activities are located in the parks and along the route. Motorized vehicles are allowed to pass through the route at designated crossings and are allowed on the route for resident and emergency access.

While many will choose to participate by bicycle, this Sunday Parkways also will feature two organized walks:

AARP’s Bridging Generations walk begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Woodlawn Park amphitheatre and continues for 1.2 miles to Alberta Park. The all-ages walk is being organized by AARP in conjunction with Elders in Action, Foster Grandparent Program of Multnomah County, Bridge Meadows and Metropolitan Family Services Experience Corps.

Kaiser Permanente, Sunday Parkways presenting sponsor, will host “Walk with a Doc” at noon beginning at Alberta Park and ending 1.2 miles later at Woodlawn Park.

Sunday Parkways is organized by the Portland Bureau of Transportation with its many community partners, including presenting sponsor Kaiser Permanente, as well as Universal Cycles, Portland Parks & Recreation, Metro and Clif Kid.

The events promote healthy active living by opening the city’s largest public space – its streets – to walk, bike, roll and discover active transportation while fostering civic pride by connecting citizens with each other in an active, healthy environment and economic development through including local businesses who participate as vendors and sponsors.
