I hope you’re planning to join us tomorrow night (2/3) for an evening with Ginny Sullivan from the Adventure Cycling Association. Ms. Sullivan is leading ACA’s efforts to develop a U.S. Bicycle Route System (USBRS) that would blanket our country with a network of signed and numbered bike-friendly routes connecting urban and suburban areas.
It’s a dream that’s closer to reality than you might think.
Sullivan is coming through Portland on her way to the big Smart Growth Conference up in Seattle that begins on Thursday. She’s carved out some time to sit down with me and share insights from the trenches of trying to push the federal government and state departments of transportation to begin implementation of the USBRS.
During our conversation, you’ll learn which states are already starting to plan routes, which states are dragging their feet, and which state has outright refused to get involved. You’ll also learn about her experiences dealing with the vast transportation bureaucracy, where new ideas — especially ones having to do with non-motorized transportation — are barely given the time of day.
There’s also some recent developments to talk about. The Obama Administration’s new budget has put $20 million into the new Office of Livability, which in previous incarnations has included the establishment of the USBRS as an official USDOT-led program.
