This year, bike event season seems to only have sped up as the weather has gotten cooler. Tonight’s grand opening of the Artcrank poster show marks the beginning of six weeks of Oregon Manifest. The Manifest’s flagship events are also this weekend, in which 30 framebuilders are competing for judges’ approval and in a 77 mile race. The infamous Cross Crusade series opens on Sunday. As if that isn’t enough, there’s also a full lineup including a bike move, social rides, a wonky talk, and a movie.
Friday, October 2
Noon – 2:00pm: PSU Transportation Seminar
A talk on “Designing Active Transportation for a Wide Range of Users” by Copenhagen senior traffic planner and longtime bicycle advocate Niels Jensen. 506 SW Mill Street, Room 204.
3:30pm – 5:00pm: Business on a Bike
This laid-back business networking ride is back after a short hiatus, with a new, more central meeting point — the Vera Katz statue on the Eastbank Esplanade, under the Hawthorne Bridge.
6:30pm: Vegan Dinner Ride
Meet at SE 20th and Yamhill (Colonel Summers Park) for the third edition of the Vegan dinner ride. Rain or shine — ride to one location for a delicious, affordable vegan meal, and then onward for drinks and socializing.
7:00pm – 10:00pm: Oregon Manifest Design Challenge Party
Celebrate the opening of the six-week long Oregon Manifest and get an eyeful of hot handmade bikes — the judges’ top twelve favorite offerings in the Constructor’s Design Challenge. 539 NW 10th (at Hoyt)
Saturday, October 3
9:00am: Sacred Space East Portland Ride
Take a tour through Outer NE Portland and experience some of the “sacred spaces” of our community. Using bike routes and bike paths, we will visit eight places including both Buddhist and Christian sites, sacred tree groves, a Ghost Bike, and the Parkrose Community Peace Labyrinth. Meet at Eastminster Church, 12505 NE Halsey St.
2:00pm – 7:00pm: Dreams on Wheels
Open both Saturday and Sunday — see the Oregon Manifest website for the full, six week long schedule — this exhibit demonstrates the transformative power of the bicycle in Denmark.
3:00pm – 11:00pm Oregon Manifest Constructor’s Race
7:00pm and 9:00pm: New World Disorder 10: Dust and Bones
A mountain bike movie showing at the Clinton Street Theater (SE 26th and Clinton) — earlier show is all ages.
Sunday, October 4
8:50am: River City Bicycles Cross Crusade Series Race #1
The epic Cross Crusade series starts today, out at Alpenrose Dairy. If you attend any ‘cross race this season, as a spectator or participant, make it today’s race or the Halloween event.
9:30am: Sun, Wind, and Gears
A 35 mile ride through Washington County (or a 55 mile route option starting in Portland) including stops to tour a solar energy plant, a wildlife preserve, and a worm composting farm that feeds a college. Benefits the work of Green Empowerment, an organization that helps bring sustainable energy to the developing world.
10:30am: Move by Bike!
Meet at NE 9th and Mason. Plenty of food, drinks, and glory along the way.
2:00pm – 5:00pm: Natural Disasters and Geologic History of Cascadia
Professor #1 Badass is back in town from the wilds of Vegas for the weekend, and leading an edition of his expert geologic tour of the city. (Intern Dan Liu reported on a version of this ride during June’s Pedalpalooza). Meet at the Washington Park MAX station.
