Lots of opportunities for bike fun this weekend — depave a parking lot, trade an old bike for free breakfast, help out with a bike move, learn the history of youth hostels, and more.

Friday, August 28

7:00am – 9:00am: Breakfast on the Bridges
Oh yeah! Free coffee and pastries for non-motorized travelers over the Hawthorne and Steel bridges. West end of the Hawthorne, lower deck on the Steel. Show up for coffee, stay to chat.

5:45pm: Happy Friday Ride
Come on out and enjoy August, and the start of the weekend with a safe, mellow ride through a few (mostly) S.E. neighborhoods. Route takes about an hour, and often ends with a pub stop. Meet up outside of Palio on the big circle in Ladd’s Addition starting at 5:45, kick off promptly at 6:15.

10:00pm: Freaky Friday!
The North Freak Cycling Collective’s monthly ride. Meet at Irving Park (NE 7th Ave and Fargo), ride to mystery jousting location. 10:00pm, Ride at 10:30, fourth Friday of every month.

Saturday, August 29

8:45am – 4:00pm: Depave Kailash Ecovillage
Help transform part of a parking lot into a community garden at Kailash Ecovillage, 4311 SE 37th Ave (at Holgate). All are welcome to drop by any time for a few hours of good, hard work.

9:00am – 1:00pm: Give a Bike, Get a Bite
Bob’s Red Mill in Milwaukie is hosting a bike drive for the Community Cycling Center. Come donate a bike at the Bob’s Red Mill Whole Grains Store & Visitors Center at 5000 SE International Way in Milwaukie and get a coupon for a free meal at the store.

4:00pm: Hostelling International Anniversary Bike Ride
2009 marks the 100th anniversary of Hostelling International world-wide, the 75th anniversary of Hostelling International in the USA, and the 25th anniversary of Portland’s own Hawthorne Hostel. Celebrate with a fun, casual ride from Portland’s NW Hostel (425 NW 18th Ave) to the Hawthorne location, including some historic locales (and commentary by local historian Shawn Granton), refreshment stops, and a big, free, open-to-all anniversary party at the end.

9:00pm: Laura’s Benefit Party
Zoobombers are throwing a benefit party for Laura Sherrod, the young woman who was hospitalized in critical condition after crashing at the annual Hood Bomb. $3 admission and auction will help with Laura’s medical bills. Party goes til dawn or til the beer’s gone at the old Recyclery (SE 9th and Madison). Organizers are seeking donations for the auction.

Sunday, August 30

10:30am: A Foolish Bike Move
Breakfast tacos and caffeine in the pre-move and pizza and beer in the post-move. In between — boxes, bikes, and good old fashioned fun. Social time starts at 10:30, loading a bit thereafter, roll around noon.
Starts at Fool’s old house, 2147 NW Glisan.
