Seen in Portland: “Dutch” on a tall-bike and lucky kids

Buffered Bike Lane with a bike symbol and arrow pointing forward

As many of you who already know, all sorts of interesting things can be seen while riding around a city.

I’ve been trying to snap photos of random sights on the bikeways around Portland more often. Here are three things that caught my eye in the past few days…

I spotted this woman and her child (didn’t actually chat with them) crossing N. Interstate Avenue this morning. The bike looks like a Haley Trike — in fact, I think I’ve ridden it myself (small world!). What I love about this is how it captures so many things: taking your kid to school by bike, using a cool trike to do the job, and of course, mixing it all with politics. Nice.

And then there’s Jon Paglia, A.K.A. “Dutch”. I rode by him over the weekend while out riding with my family. I met Dutch a few weeks ago when I accompanied him and a few other thrill-seekers on my first experience with Gravity Biking (full story soon).

In the photo above, Dutch is rolling what looks to be a freshly painted tall-bike (love the gold!) and I bet he’ll be riding it in the St. Johns Parade on Sunday along with a few of his “North Freak” bike club friends.

This is Martina and Karl Fahrner in Southeast Portland last Saturday. Martina is one of the co-owners of Clever Cycles. She was riding this awesome Kidz Tandem, made by Brown Cycles in Grand Junction Colorado. Juli and I are thinking that tandem will be our next family bike purchase so we stopped and chatted about it with her. We’ve got to schedule a test ride!

That’s it for now. I’ve always got my camera in my pannier (or on my back) and I’ll be sharing more scenes from Portland’s bikeways in the future…
