World Day of Remembrance 2020
November 15, 2020 at 11:00 am - 11:30 am
Location: SE Hogan Rd & SE 5th St, Gresham, OR 97080 (rain or shine)
Darla Sturdy and Michelle DuBarry know something that no mother should know: what it means to lose a child in a traffic crash. They don’t want anyone else to experience this loss.
That is why families of crash victims created Families for Safe Streets in Oregon and SW Washington. And, it’s why safety advocates, including Darla and Michelle, will gather at one of Oregon’s deadliest crosswalks this Sunday, which is World Day of Remembrance for traffic crash victims 2020. https://worlddayofremembrance.org/
Darla and Michelle will speak about their families’ experiences, and answer reporters’ questions.
Joining them, Oregon Walks safety advocate and attorney Scott Kocher will share facts about increasing pedestrian crashes that disproportionately affect Gresham and East Portland, after decades of inadequate funding for street improvements. Oregon Walks is a non-profit based in Portland working to make streets safe for people to walk and use mobility devices.
The event location, SE Hogan Road and SE 5th St in Gresham, is where Luis Medina, an 11-year-old student was struck and killed by a driver as he was walking to school on January 6, 2020. Two weeks earlier, 17-year-old Jayden Auberry was struck and killed less than a block away.
All participants are asked to comply with COVID-19 protocols, including wearing masks and maintaining social distance.
