Public Hearing for the Adoption of the Vancouver Complete Streets Policy
Vancouver City Hall Council Chambers
Complete Streets are streets for everyone. Whether people are traveling by car, bicycle, transit, or as pedestrians, they need safe, comfortable and convenient travel routes.
In January 2016, Vancouver City Council adopted the What’s Next Vancouver! Building Our City’s Future 2016-21 Strategic Plan. The Strategic Plan sets forth a vision for Vancouver as a vibrant, safe, and prosperous city, and includes support for waterfront development, arts and culture, transportation infrastructure improvements, improved parks, public safety, and for taking care of the assets we already have. It includes goals that are ambitious, and will guide policy-making priorities over the next several years.
Complete Streets are a high priority in the 2016-21 Strategic Plan:
Goal 1: Ensure our built environment is one of the safest, most environmentally responsible and well maintained in the Pacific Northwest.
Objective 1.1: Develop and maintain a safe, balanced and innovative transportation system that will meet the needs of future generations
Action 1.1.1: Adopt and implement a “Complete Streets” program (e.g., designed and operated to enable safe mobility for all users)
Creating and adopting a Complete Streets policy will help make our streets safer and more accessible. Adopting a policy will also enable the City to leverage local funding more competitively for state and federally funded transportation grant programs. See the State of Washington Transportation Improvement Board for one such funding program.
The Complete Streets initiative is a collaborative effort by the Department of Community and Economic Development and Public Works.
