The Oregon Historical Society Research Library is pleased to present an original glass lantern slide program on the building of the Columbia River Highway. Comprised of over 100 hand-colored glass slides, the program was created in 2016 to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the opening of the highway. Modeled after the great scenic highways in Europe, the program looks at the history of the roadway, including the politics of public parks in Portland, issues of grading, coping, and the power of the automobile to enact change (for better or worse).

Doug Kenck-Crispin (Kick Ass Oregon History) and Matthew Cowan (Oregon Historical Society) have been presenting this program in person at historical societies, bars, and theaters around the state since 2016. Due to current restrictions on public programs, this will be the first time this program will be available to you in your own home — on your own screen.

The evening will begin with a brief introduction and a look at the technology and slides. Then, the presentation will begin, showing digital scans with Kenck-Crispin narrating live. Comments will be open and a Q&A will follow. Please note this program will not be recorded.

Doug Kenck-Crispin writes about Oregon and is the Resident Historian for the podcast Kick Ass Oregon History. He studied history at Portland State University. Matthew Cowan has been the Archivist for Moving Images & Photography at the Oregon Historical Society since 2014.
